I'm looking for some ideas on where to start trouble shooting my Jacobs 56 machine that won't cool.

The evaporator runs and when turning the thermostat to 1 or higher the compressor kicks in. Just never gets cold. Could it be as simple as finding a local service guy to come charge up the compressor with some refrigerant? I've attached a couple of pics of compressor model and a tag that is located in front of the coils.

Thanks in advance,

First with the thermostat off, put a rag in the lower fan blade so it is silent.
Then turn it to on and verify the compressor is vibrating (pumping).
If so, turn it off and look for a leak. It will show up as residual of a fine spray of oil.
It probably needs service so it's best to remove the unit and carry it in to a refrigeration shop,
because mobil hourly service calls can become costly.

Thanks MoonDawg

If I remove the unit from the cabinet, do I remove both the compressor and the evaporator as one unit from the machine - since they are connected together with copper tubing?

Is R-12 refrigerant the same as F-12 refrigerant?
