Don't give up yet. The power of hard cash works well. Offer $700 start with counting out a few $100 bills and have another $700 in the other pocket. May not get the deal of the century but even at $1400 you are still ahead. Hope you get it!!

Eric. I bought one in much worse shape for $1000. Had to weld new grill on one side because of rust. ( broke loose the spot welds and removed the entire panel, from the base, up to the chrome divider....then welded in the full panel from a square corner 56, nice fit)
I restored that machine and it just sold last weekend for $6000. You found your machine, now use the $100. dollar bill advice and go buy it

I can't get over this Vendo 56 machine thing....... I think I'm going tonight..... and make the offer... Is that too early? .... I'm afraid to wait too long.... He may leave and haul it off with him. I figure if a grand won't get then forget it..... Man I need serious help.....
Never troubled over a machine like this....

If you have a thousand to spend on this machine, I wouldn't hesitate!
As far as opening dialog, just start where your mom left off... Tell him you've been looking for an old coke machine that you would like to bring back to life. And just ask if you would be willing to part with it and bring out $800 in hundreds; hopefully, he'll mention the $1000 price that was discussed previously which may open the door for you to say, "OK... I'll take it" in a low and monotone voice while your insides are about to burst out with joy.
Above all, try to remain calm and not over excited.
