What were the vertical absorbing pads made out of , that rested vertically in the drip pan, underneath on the 81d.  I have them and they're hard boards.

They are called wafers or soakers - made of fiberglass (the repros are at least)

I think the originals were unglazed low fire ceramic. Soak them in Dawn dishwashing soap overnight and scrub with a nylon brush. If white and porous ceramic. Most originals are long gone. Any pictures would be great.
