Just a question on the oil being used:
Have you guys ever used 100% virgin coconut oil and how does it taste ?
I bought the white coconut oil like the movie theaters would use that has the trans fats and bad for you .  Oo
I know the virgin oil is twice as much but heathly for you just wondering how it tastes .

Delicious, It's not hydrogenated, and it has zero cholesterol and no trans-fat too, so unless you eat it by the bucket-full I think you'll live.

I use it often in my baked goods & pastries, way better than vegetable shortening.   smile

Just note that pure Coconut oil is a white solid below 76-deg Fahrenheit and is suitable up to 350-degs.F

Agree with Johnnie.   Coconut oil has a bad somewhat misleading rap because of the partially hydrogenated stuff.  Virgin coconut oil actually has some significant health benefits.

I'm going to have to try the coconut oil in my el cheapo popcorn maker, curious to see the difference.

Had some cooked up with coconut oil from Larry's Popperette machine this year in Chicago.  Best popcorn I've ever had.  Not sure if it was the coconut oil or the delivery method.   smile

Since I can't afford a Popperette, I'm thinking of picking up one of those cheap pseudo-vintage cart things so I can cook up my own.

Here's the one I have, very cheap and plastic, but it makes some really good popcorn: http://www.casa.com/p/waring-pro-wpm25-professional-popcorn-maker-274834?site=CA&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=cpc_C&utm_term=XOA-018&utm_campaign=GoogleAW&CAWELAID=1309091149&utm_content=pla&adtype=pla&cagpspn=pla

Jim, here is the one I use,
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Great-Northern-Popcorn-Red-Foundation-Popcorn-Popper-Machine-8-Ounce-/291047678940?pt=Small_Kitchen_Appliances_US&hash=item43c3cb23dc

Heavy duty, and you can find the popcorn coconut oil and salt pre-packaged.  I love it.

I used the white coconut oil in the popperette but then was reading how bad it is for you
but then read about how healthy 100% virgin coconut oil is . Just wondering what you guys run in your machine .

Thanks Jim - that's exactly the machine I was looking at myself.  I want the version with the cart, but otherwise the same one.

I first started using Snappy Popcorns oil from the internet.  Snappy had three or more different varieties of coconut oil.  A blend, white, and orange.  The orange is just beta carotine added to the oil to give the popcorn that fake butter look.  Then I saw that Snappys oil was actually Columbus Foods from Chicago with a Snappy label.  So I bought from Columbus on South kedzie ave.

Columbus has since moved to Des Plaines Il. and they wont sell the popcorn oil to the general public anymore.  The do still have a soap division and the soap division sells Soapers Choice coconut oil.  It is your standard white coconut oil.  So that delicious taste that  everyone enjoyed at my house was Soapers Choice coconut oil.  tounge

So the next time my kids swear and my wife wants me to wash their mouths out with soap, I'm going to feed them some Popperette popcorn.  laugh  biggrin  laugh

Here's Snappy Popcorns page.
