I am starting to plan out my restoration on my Vendo 81D and the first question I have is whether to paint or chrome the main door hinges.  Any thoughts?  I have had them chromed before on other restorations but they were painted originally.  Correct?

I replaced mine with a new set from SJW.

It was $12 and about 20 minutes of labor.

My mistake thought you were talking about the bottle door hinges.

Brian,
I paint all my main door hinges, I take the hinge pin out and polish it up real nice and reinstall it in the painted hinge.. then put in new stainless steel bolts.. I like that look against the freshly painted hinge.

I've seen some 39 hinges that are stainless and I leave those all polished up...

I have seen chromed hinges but never have done it.. just not my style I guess.

Thanks John,

I will paint them and just polish the pin.

I have restored a few early version 39's with stainless hinges. Once they get polished, they look like chrome, and look great against the all red body of the 39. I think the 81's look good with painted, as they where... The 81 D has the two tone paint and stainless banding to give it some zing, Hinges chromed might be too much.

I think either way look good but what I like is to paint them but make you you remove them to paint separately to avoid paint build up, then get stainless bolts and polish the tops.

Painted is my opinion

I really like crome when it's responsibly and not so much more than original. I thought the same on cars. No 22"s with spinners for me
