I have found a nice origional cavalier 64 stylestar machine that is in great working condition and is in great cosmetic condition. The sign is really nice and clear. I do not know much about this model since I have never had one before. The guy wants $300 for it. Is it worth getting it? it is local so shipping is not a factor. I forgot to take the memory card for my digital camera so I wasn't able to get pics. He also has another nice working Cavalier 64 and a really nice what I think is a Vendo 92-3 or something like it. He wants $800 for all but I don't have that kind of money right now. What do you think I should do? Please help.

Hey,
I'm new to the forums and am also unsure of the value of some machines. A couple weeks ago however I bought a Cavalier CSS-80 (a model very similar to the 64) for $150 dollars. This machine needs a new paint job, has all the shelves, and the compressor turns on but doesn't get cold. I have seen your model of machine go for around $500 or $600 on ebay, so $300(depending on the condition) doesn't sound like a bad price. You have to keep in mind that these machines will only go up in value over the next few years.(If you restore them of course). This CSS-80 is the first machine I'm going to try to restore, so you will be sure to see me on here a lot, as I will probably have many questions about restoring the machine. I'm only a 22 year old poor college student(who isn't very handy), so it should be an adventure making the attempt at the restoration.

Actually I am from Cedar Falls, Iowa. The reason I came to wanting a pop machine is because I worked at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, filling pop machines. The guy who fixed the machines that worked for Pepsi sold me a giant Vendo 440-6 select for 200 bucks. From there I kept looking in the paper at auctions and stuff and came across the Cavalier CS-80 and decided to try my hand at fixing it up. I don't have the tools to paint it, but I plan on buying new trim, bottle opener, coin return, lights, sign, and decals. I don't know much about refrigeration, the compressor works but doesn't cool. Someone told me I would have to try and cut a line and put freon or whatever they use in there. I am unsure of the procedure to restoring freon. I do have a question about the paint job though.
With the two different colors of white and red on the sides of the machines, how would the body shop guys go about painting that? And also, with the "Things go better with a Coke" on the side of the machine, how do I go about having that put on? Would I buy the decals and take it to the paint guys? Or could I put them on myself after the painting has been done?
Any help with these questions would be great.

In terms of two tone paint, the shop will mask off the section to be painted the second color, ie spray the bottom section red, then cover with paper, and spray the top white.
Funtronics sells the "things go better with Coke" decals. they are water based decals, if you ever put decals on a model when you were a kid, you know the drill. If it makes you feel more comfortable having the body shop put them on, do it.

I have a local vinyl shop make my decals for me. I like the look of vinyl and they are much easier to put on. Just take a picture of what you want done and measure it and take the pictures to a vinyl sign shop and they will make them for you. They will probably cost around $15 each. The two tone paint will cost alot more money. I normally paint mine all red and put the earlier have a coke white top on mine. And I do it in vinyl.

There is more to the process of painting two tone lettering and it would really require some experience to get it right. This is just another reason to go with vinyl decals. In the case of masking off the underlying red (or whatever color) primary coat to paint your white lettering, you need to use the appropriate autobody type mask tape to get a clean edge. Additionally, this mask needs to be removed while the lettering paint is still drying, but not too soon, so the paint edge will flow just a little to leave a clean line. If you don't, what happens is the dried edge wants to hold on to the mask edge when removing and you end up with a jagged line (and have to start over).

I just went to look at the machines. The style star machine is really nice. It is 100% rust free and cools. What do you think is it worth $300.

$300 is a bit pricey, but if the guy isn't willing to come down at all $300 isn't a bad price for a fully functional machine like that.
I'm not a fan of the wood paneling, but you can buy paneling for it right?
If you saw my other post you noticed that I found a style star for 65 bucks.
If you saw the picture the bottom of the machine is in poor condition, is their anyway I can replace that bottom panel?
