Im not old enough (31) to remeber these at all but I have one still in the plastic!  My Dad gave it to me after finding it in onweof his old cabinets in the garage!

I never saw that before either.  I wonder if one end had a rubber seal?  I would imagine the pop would be spilling out of the bottle without one.  Very cool, you could have crushed ice and chill your drink.

Were these things red and white... look like a large fishing bobber? Remember seeing something like what you're talking
about in an antique store years ago... Coke made them.

They were called an Astro-Float from the 1950s...Petretti's 9th edition (older) Coke price guide. pg 265- $5.
On ebay for around $20

Eric, after seeing that post I have definitely seen them on Ebay before...I thought they were fishing bobbers too!
