It's not wood Jim, some kind of material I'm not familiar with, it's layered kind of fiberglass looking.  Sure does look like wood now that you say that!

Is it like this? We used to have Phenolic block material on the airplanes. It always looked sort of like wood, and it was very light.

The inside was a little bit of an experiment...I started with oven cleaner to get the initial layer of grime off, then pulled what I could off and soaked in carb cleaner for a few days. Then a fine wire wheel on a drill, followed by #00 steel wool with some chrome polish mixed in.  To finish it off, I used one of those foam automotive wheel polishing cones with the chrome polish, which brought that mirror shine to the coin hopper.
