What to use in place of tar for body seams?

Hello all - I'm restoring a Westinghouse (WD-12) cooler, and was wondering what product is typically used in place of where the tar was originally used along the interior body seams? This would include the body seams below the liner etc.
Thanks in advance to all that reply!

HVAC Sealing putty, ( not plumbers putty) it stays where you put it & won't run ( leak an oily liquid that will run down the painted surfaces ) when it gets warm.
