I know there has been a lot of trash talk about Ricks Restorations and the other types of shows, but they do serve a purpose I think. My oldest son Rob (14) has taken an interest in these shows. He has always been interested in the soda machines and arcade games I have.. After watching a few of these episodes, he wanted to restore something. He loves working with tools and is very mechanical and creative. I had 2 import gum ball machines on a stand that someone had given me and its been sitting in the basement for 2 years trying to figure out what to do with it. Rob wanted to restore these, so I told him to go for it. The next day, I came home from work and the 2 machines were off the stand. The stand was completely disassembled, cleaned and spray painted. The machines needed new globes and my younger son snapped the key in the lock of one of the machines. He looked on the internet, found the company, and found the replacement parts he needed. We bought new globes and locks. He got the machines all put back together tonight, mounted on the stands, ready for candy. Of course there is more money into these machines than they are ever worth for resale, but they are priceless since he rebuilt them himself. He wants to find a location to put these machines at to make some money to buy more projects.. He wants to tackle my U-select it machine next. Here are the finished machines..

Great story! Thanks for sharing. Wish I could get my kids interested in something like that. They all seem to be into electronic things (newer stuff in other words) moreso than the older antiquities that need restoration. Perhaps someday....

Nice story Bubba! I'd call you Ken, but I don't want to confuse people. I'm with you Ken R...my kids don't have any interest at all. They just want me to fix up and fill up the Stoner!

Haha, I only have one left at home, the other three have all growed up on us, and he is more interested in playing his guitar and collection old video game systems. I guess the collection part has at least rubbed off on him. We shall see how it works out as time goes on!!

Thanks guys.. I am very proud of him. He is also into electronics and repair. He has done some soldering already and wants to help me on my next arcade monitor rebuild. I have a Victor 77 capsule vending machine that he wants to rip into also. That one need a bit more work, so it should be a good challenge for him.

Very Cool... I am alwasy encouraging my kids in helping with my restorations... the facination usually lasts for about 10 minutes and then it's more fun to ride bikes or something... but they are young yet... I'll keep working on them...

If you are an office worker like most of us, put them in or near your cubicle at work with regular M&Ms in one and Peanut M&Ms in the other from your favorite warehouse store. Should make you about $90 in profit a quarter - every 3 months.
