Restoring America...1 machine at a time!

« on: December 09, 2010, 07:01:44 pm »

Just picked up some Dupont basecoat today for a machine i'm restoring and couldn't believe where prices are headed. I paid $165 for a quart of chroma base and it was yellow! I wanted to go with lacquer but was quoted $214 for a quart! Excuse me.... did you say $214 dollars? Geesh! I know the red colors are expensive because of the pigments but come on people. $300 for a gallon of clear and $110 for activator on top of that makes these machines very expensive to restore. I need to find a cheaper line of paint and wanted to see what you guys are using for your machines. I know Dupont has a cheaper line of paint but it's selective as to what you can get, color wise. Chime in if you've had good luck with an "economy" brand of paint.

PPG Shop Line Base Clear.

2 quarts of red
1 quart of white
1 quart of epoxy primer
1 quart of filler primer or sealer
2 quarts of clear

around $450.00

and that does not include

reducer at $24.00 a gallon
sand paper, and other supplies

but hey they give you free strainers and mixing sticks

And people wonder why restorations cost so much.. If you don't do your own paint, you have to tack on labor on top of the material cost and end up with around 1000-1500 just in Body and Paint work...

Just wait until the EPA puts on more regulations on paint in 2012 . There talking about having to be certified to buy and spray paint. Kinda like buying r12 freon ? If your a shop you can't paint with more than 3oz out in the shop and all other painting / primeing must be done in a paint booth or a prep station with a roof and 3 walls . For home users you will be regulated to 2 paint jobs a year in your garage . I don't know how they will track that other than paint sales ? It's coming so be prepaired for more cost in the future .

It's cheaper by the gallon. I can get a few machines out of a gallon of Red base coat.
