I can't spot it in the last pic you posted.
Is (or was) there a hole on the main door and/or liner too? What diameter is the hole in the wooden dowel? 1/2"? I'm guessing the mechanical mech shaft went through it maybe.

Reply #5 appears to display behind the cabinet door, behind the coin mech area with the door liner removed. This wood might have been a spacer as in the VMC 27/33...
As we can see, this is a transitional machine and was originally designed for a manual crank handle operation.

I think you are right about a possible mechanical shaft penatration. I will try and post another pic tonight with some type of spring linkage that sits bellow the chrome insert for the bottle door. Also the hole is about 1/2" dia. with three wood screws that held the linner to it.

That is what it is. On the square top V56 and V81 transitional machines the linkage is on the outside of the liner. It is a spacer giving the door liner stability around the coin mech shaft.

Yep - that is part of the linkage that used to run from the mechanical mech to the bottle stack.
