Electrical cord

Getting ready to hook up the refrigeration unit. I noticed one of the wires has the ribbed insulation on the outside. Now is the ribbed one positive or ground or does it matter ? Also, on the cord that plugs into the junction box does it matter which wire goes to the starter relay and the overload relay ? Thanks !

On most machines the ribbed wire of the pair is neutral/white , the smooth is hot/black . with reference to ground/green.

the neutral is connected  to the  overload/common and the start/run connection  is connected to hot

but it's more important to keep it consistant within the same machine, ie; if your going to use ribbed as neutral, then  it's neutral for all of the circuts from the compressor deck right up to the coinmech. (pin 1 should be hot, pin 2 neutral)

( there is no positive/negative polarity on A.C.)
