I had read another post, sometime back, about using
contact paper, sanding the top off, and then painting
the embossment white. Well, I'm happy to say, I did it and it
really worked out great! I simply went to Wal-Mart and purchased a roll of contact paper. Peeled the backing off and installed it on a WD22 chest, the large front embossing. Using an orbital sander, with 80 grit paper, went to town. Careful not to get too deep, gently took off the top layer. It really kept a clean line around the edges. After I finished painting, I came back with a small brush and "cleaned up ", just a little, around some of the areas, like inside the "a" and "o" in coca and cola. Other than that...quick, painless, and turned out nice. No way could I have done it by hand.
Great idea...

That seems like a rough grit to be sanding with or is this just until you get through the contact paper... At which time you can go to a fine grit for final paint...
I usually don't final paint anything under 400 wet sanded and 80 grit is very course; scratches will eventually show in the lettering if a finer sand paper isn't used to remove the 80 grit scratches...

Okay, since I'm no computer guy...use this link to see the pics of the chest I have done using the contact paper and sander. This, I feel, is a good and quick way for getting around the vinyl lettering, if it's not available. Remember, only the front is done by this method. I'm using vinyl on the sides.

It looks good from the photos...
I'm very finicky about lettering and would have to see a detailed photo to see the edge consistency throughout the lettering... but that's me.

Thanks.
The box isn't finished yet. The sides will be done in
vinyl. I couldn't find anything that large and I remembered someone posting
about that method...so I tried it. The 80 grit is so you can get thru the
contact paper. Anything less will simply melt the paper (if vinyl) and the glue,
making a mess.
