Will dipping a coin mech in acetone to get off the paint over spray be damaging to the mech or its metal in any way?

depends on what type it is, purely mechanical/metal with a crank handle ( all metal) probably not. but if it's a and electromechanical /metal base unit, yes it will be damaged, or if its a plastic type it will be eaten alive & damaged beyond repair.

have fun...remember Acetone is Extremely flammable, Plenty of ventilation, no open flames, pilot lights, no dipping it in the basement near the gas water-heater or clothes dryer...Or a Big Bada Boom! (the Fifth element)

Personally I'd use a non-flammable brake-cleaner on a rag & wipe it down.
