On May 17, a decommissioned aircraft carrier was sunk 24 miles off the coast of Pensacola, FL to make an artificial reef.. Here is a link to some of the pictures...

I was watching that sinking closely. I am an avid diver. It is a real shame that they sunk that boat so deap. It went down in over 200 foot of water. Why would they do that? It makes no sense. It is almost useless at that depth Yet they say it is part of an artificial reaf project. Oh well.

It was supposed to have been upright, but it is listing, meaning the flight deck is too deep for most recreational divers. The point was to make the flight deck the attraction for divers, but it ddn't work.

Not a diver, but they covered the sinking extensively in the Panama City media.
