Jim
I don't remember when I registered, but is there email verification for registration?  Some sites I've admin'd at will only allow a mod or admin approve a registration. I know PHPBB and Vbulletin have this feature available. It puts more work on management, but helps weed out the spam posts... Just a thought to keep out the riff raff..

Ken,

The registration process can be changed to require Admin/Moderators to review new registrations prior to allowing posting privileges etc, etc...

This process isn't going to stop the spammers that register; they'll just do what is necesary to complete the process and then begin to post their material... The down side is the freedom new users would have browsing the threads; they would have to wait until their registration can be processed... Something I'd rather not do at this point in time.

As I have said in the past, SMC is here to better everyone in soda machine knowledge and I'll do whatever is best for SMC and our members!  If the general concensus is to restrict new registrations until they can be processed by me or another admin/modirator, then this will be the direction we venture into...

I wonder if email verification would cut down a little on spammers - since they would at least have to have a valid email in order to finish registration.

I PMed you a little more info Jim.

Jim - you could also require real email... ie not from a known freebie service like yahoo.com, gmail.com, hotmail.com, etc.

Many (maybe most?) of the paid services also enforce "no spamming" rules for their account holders.  So if you put a condition on membership that says posts can only be for the discussion, selling or buying of sodamachines and someone posts crap about free MP3's then you *may* have some recourse.

email would be great but what if you dont have a email address with the people that provide your email. It cost extra for my service for email and I only use yahoo.

As it stands, Brent has setup email verification so that a new registration won't be activiated until the new member receives and acknowledges the message sent.

I prefer not to ban by email server, ie yahoo.com, for just the reason Joey stated. I guess it's a trade off we may have to live with... Up until recently, it hasn't been an issue; time will tell...
