Hello All,
Forgive me as I didn't find specific info on my search...
I'm looking at painting my 81 w/ a water-based base/clear system and wanted to know if anyone has experience clearing over water transfer decals and vinyl as well...? I prefer the look of vinyl as it doesn't have the extra clear space that so commonly changes from clear to opaque over time... I'm also not sure how the vinyl edge will do with clear coat... I would like to set all the decals, have the door lettered and clear everything at once...
Any direction is greatly appreciated!

Jim, I'd check with who made the decals. The gas pump guys have had some problems and success. Depends on the decal ink and type of clear coat. Creighton

Thanks Creighton!
I briefly spoke with my painter and he said he didn't know, but get a flat piece of metal, base coat it, apply decals, and then clear it to see what happens...
I was just trying to avoid the extra work and see if anyone has applied water transfer decals like the CC Hand w/ Bottle, coin return, bottle opener, etc, etc... and applied water based clear coat...?

Jim, Doubt water based clear coat would cause any harm on the vinyl. Water transfer could have problems. I'd hate to waste a decal just to see what happens :-( If the 81 will be indoors with no UV exposure reduces the problems that show up later. Shrinkage, crackling, bubbling... Best person I can think to ask is T-way on oldgas. Hope all goes well !! Creighton

Clearing over vinyl is no problem . Clearing over water release decals will pinhole and bubble . Not recomended . (I paint for a living )

Thanks zadd ! ! !
Guess I'll apply water decals after clear-coat... Would have looked much nicer under the clear!

I have cleared over both before and had success. With both I have always sprayed a few fog coats on them and ;et them get tacky before shooting a full layer of paint. If you fog over them it builds a layer over them to lay the paint and then the thinner doesn't melt them.

I have sprayed a light coat of spray can clear over them (water release ) and then 2 full coats of clear and it worked but you can't bake the clear you have to let the clear coat air dry .baking the clear will make the paint breath and cause bubbles. Vinyl is a much easier to work with . Glad to hear the RC machine has been brought back to life
