Post by: Eric on March 25, 2020, 12:24:09 pm
Well.. I joined Facebook finally a few weeks back... I will say it's nothing like this site... It's cool you can "join" little sub groups like "ACL Bottle" groups that focus on ACL bottles or a "Pepsi Only" group
for Pepsi, etc. But it's the posting that gets me.. not like here... here if someone needs help or has a question someone will answer ... and usually in great detail.. this was/is such a good group/site for that.
Now - there on Facebook you ask a question... for example "My coin mech in my 39 isn't working" you will get "Here's a picture of my 39" then someone will post after that "Here's my Coke 81"
then you get "Nice 81- you restore it yourself?".. "No bought it like that a few years ago" - Ha - goes totally off the subject that never gets answered. That's all the time...

Now since folks are stranded at home bored out of their minds some have post images of their collection only to get comments like "New Crap", "That stuff is worthless", "I only collect older stuff", "Repro", etc...  I dropped out of a couple groups because of all the negative comments.... those comments hurt people's feelings... why comment like that?... then there are tons of ''Know it Alls" that guess what..  clueless on what they are talking about...

The good about Facebook... people from all over...I can be in several groups of several different interest and get notices when someone post. I see folks from here there... I enjoy the images posted...
so many great finds still out there.. online auctions... and selling going on... I've yet to find that Nichol Kola standard or even bottle opener... but it may happen.

Still come here and check in... Always will...I felt I knew folks here and knew who to ask what if I had a question... a lot of knowledge here.... I was looking through pages of archives here last week.. so many good finds and stories. Anyway hope all are well... stay safe.

That's cool.  I joined years ago to hopefully find some old friends and all I found was people that I normally see,  I didn't think much of that new fangled thing called The Facebook back then.  I tried to get out of it and it was really tough.  Finally, after a lot of Google searches and not viewing it for a half year or something crazy like that, I was set free.  Still Facebookless in this house.

I was tempted to get on there because of all the little groups but then I said nahhhh, I like the homey feeling I get here.  I also heard that you can sell on Facebook too.  That may be worth joining if you have things to sell or things to buy.

Like everything else in life, Facebook has both it's ups and downs. Many groups out there, too many really. You have good people and not so good people. Lot of self promoters. By that I mean people with knowledge who don't care to share it, only if it benefits themselves. I try to help when I can. If we don't help the newbies this hobby will never grow. Slapshot Jared is very generous with his time and to helping others. Also very direct. Haha.

I find it interesting not to be on sites but to follow collectors personal page. You can learn a lot about someone by what they post, again both good and bad.

At least SMC is about the only site that doesn't have Carl BEST IN THE USA, sleepwalk Coates on it so I'm very grateful for that.

Coming in a little late...

Joined a while back and have frustrations finding things or better yet, returning to posts can be cumbersome... Not trying to sound biased; however, I do notice the people willing to help are far less apparent compared with SMC. For me, I fumble around and try to have fun...  Unfortunately, this is the new technology for people gathering and will eventually push Forums to the side...

Agree, Very sad that FB is slowing traffic on useful forums. FB Search functions are poor at best. I don't need or want 30+ "likes"when posting a question. It is very important to support this and other forums to keep the very capable search engines still available to get answers. On that note Jim you need anything to keep this one alive? Best All!

Never joined Facebook and have no desire to start now.  It's nothing but a huge time vacuum.

All of my friends couldn't understand why I wouldn't join, like I was missing out on some great thing.  Over the years, I've lost count on the number of stories I've heard from them about getting in arguments over the stupidity that is posted there and ruining relationships.  I enjoy coming to small sites like this to share hobbies & interests with like minded people :happydrinkers:.  I have absolutely no interest in Facebook.

I know myself, and am easily distracted, so never wanted to "go down the rabbit hole" and get drawn in to all the drama.

I'm no expert on FB but I enjoy some of the various groups.......but like Jim said and I hope it doesn't become true that new technology will drive forums like this one away. I'm still very much a newbie at this hobby and I'll never be the collector that some of you have become. I'm very much appreciative of all the help I get from this site! I hope it never goes away!

Couldn't have said it better myself.  The FB groups are fun to see what people are finding and so forth but there are a lot of vultures who will quickly tell someone the machine is not worth fixing and then try to swoop in and buy it.  I don't see that behavior on SMC and I appreciate the assistance that people are will to give and knowledge they are willing to share. On FB a lot of people seem to be out for themselves.

My two cents anyway!

Eric...you nailed it about Facebook.  Lots of blowhard vultures on there, but it does allow you to buy/sell parts without paying FeeBay their overpriced cut. Still love this site the best!

I'm on it, and yes it's a time sucker...

you have to take everything with a grain of salt so to speak.. yes once in a while a "Deal" pops up and sometimes you can get on it quick and score something.. but most of the time you get snubbed/sniped/criticized etc.. but it was worth the few "Deals" i've found.

I have to admit, it's been a few months since i've checked in here and thats my bad, so on this rainy afternoon.. sick of looking at Insurance policies at work, so figured i'd cruze through, catch up and say "HELLO"!
