Title: Compressor won't stay started
Post by: Jcarter168 on June 01, 2018, 12:28:34 pm
Vendo 81D original compressor.  Plug it in, compressor comes on and runs for about 4 minutes.  Just starts to cool down, then compressor shuts off but condenser fan stays on.  You can then hear the compressor try to restart kind of like a car, chug, chug.  Condenser fan stays on.  Tied T-stat wires together, same issue.  Bad compressor?

Sounds like the compressor’s start/run relays overload is tripping out on you, could be a loose connection or just a tired compressor, you can try to replace the original relay/overload setup with a “3-in-1” starter/booster & see if it stabilizes your cooling situation.  An V81 should take a 1/4 HP size booster Unit, you can get them online, or from a local HVAC Refrigeration supplier house.

I guess I will try that next.  Thanks Johnie.

OK, hooked up the 3 in 1.  Compressor stayed on for about 10 minutes and cooled down to 46 degrees before it shut off.  This time I did not hear it try to restart.  Thermostat is still not connected at this point so it should not have shut off.  Compressor got hot, not hot enough to burn me but too hot to keep my hand on.

Sad but true that it’s time for a new compressor   :oh:

or " it just needs a shot of freon"  :tounge:
