Title: Canada Dry A1
Post by: ld26 on February 05, 2016, 05:09:56 pm
this popped up locally and I couldn't not buy it, ha, it is the first A1 i've owned.  I'm surprised at how big it is! you see pics on the internet and sometimes its hard to judge size,  its heavy to carry around empty, with drinks and ice in it would be a monster to lug around...

I filled my coke version up for a Christmas party with ice and coke bottles and it weighs a ton, looks cool though!

Hhhmmm.. that Pepsi cooler seems to be in the way... maybe you should send that back this way so you can have more room for the Canada Dry cooler...
Just looking out for you!

Nice cooler... one of the harder to find A1s... good grab! :happydrinkers:

Thanks guys, good idea Eric I should probably clear some space, I think that canada dry cooler and a nichol kola junior would be more appropriate in the spot...

The Canada Dry A1's aren't plentiful. Way to go!
Before Eric starts getting all of your extra standards, don't forget that I'm out here too

When I was a teenager I worked at the Indy 500 every year. In the 70's people still carried those big A1's in full of food and Ice. It was usually two people with the cooler between them. They would even buy an extra seat for the cooler. Those were the days huh?

^^
Yup,..2people.
In fact,...some A1 and AA1's sometimes have a little baby side handle on both ends exactly for that reason.
It's really more of a latch that is just big enough for a hand to grab.
About the same caliber as the metal used on bale handles on the A2 models.
It's integrated in there very well near "like" where the bottle opener would be and on the opposite side as well.
Hope I'm not confusing anyone.
They are so camouflaged in there it's common not to really see it.
Plus it's an unusual provision that they probably made for a short period and then deleted because you can achieve the same result by having two people each grab the big over the top handle.

So cool that you used to see these in use Andy, Bigfoot good info on the side handles,

What do you guys think, restore or leave as is? I'm on the fence...

If you like this one, you won't hurt the value by restoring It, especially if that's the only way that Wifey will let it stay in the house. The top is pushed in, so if that can't be pulled satisfactorily, it may need a donor lid.
It's actually not in bad condition like it is though.
The cost of resto will not be able to be recouped, but it will look a lot better. IMO

I've seen provisions on the sides for something like handles possibly, but never seen actual side handles on A1's.
Are there any pics available?

That's a nice cooler but as referenced above the lid is the issue aesthetically.
I would keep original and try to find a beat up 7up with a good lid and swap out the lid.

Could keep it original if 7up.
They made a few generics in white too.
