Title: Barq's 55 / Blasting
Post by: Slapshot42 on November 24, 2015, 07:32:52 pm
Here is few pictures of my Barq's 55 Slider.

It took the blasting pretty well it's been a real mess getting this one started.  Bought originally as just the box only and many pieces as it was started and never was finished.  Very easy to locate parts, picked them up here and there.

The liner was completely wasted so I had to find a donor machine just for the liner!  Worked out well because I needed other goodies like kids stops, locks, etc.

I'll post some more pics as the machine starts to take shape!

I haven't seen any glass bottles of Barq's yet local!  Glass bottled soda has gained some popularity at the rate I'm going maybe in 10 years there will be!

Wondering if you decided on your color scheme when you repaint?

I was going to use a a dark blue.  PPG Shopline 190015.  A few members have them both of them have been blue.  The book shows a repainted orange one.

I have my original Barq's sitting next to my original single dot pepsi and the Barq's is slightly darker blue with a purplish hue.

I'd like to see a picture !

The only other members that have one like look more Pepsi Blue!

Walters Book says they had a hint of purple I was going to add some Pearl in the paint but wasn't sure how it would look!

If I didn't see the brand I would think it was Pepsi blue. Isn't the Barqs more of a purple tone?

According to the book you are correct .  The trick is getting to to look like that deep blueish purple without a paint code. Not very many done.

I was able to borrow a members lid stop off of their original Barq's. I compared it to my solid blue Pepsi 81. I used a PPG 190015.  They are pretty darn close .

Thoughts I had though could the original pain be faded?  With newer style type paint and a nice new clear coat make a difference in the colors, etc.

My first thought was to use the same blue that I have used before ...

Thoughts??

I think the color on that lid stop is definitely faded, thats why it looks so close to the pepsi, I'm in the process of doing my barqs cooler right now and found a spot under a piece of trim that never saw the light of day, the color is definitely a deeper blue with a purple tone, when compared to my pepsi it is a completely different color, I'll take a pic when I get home of one piece next to the pepsi blue...

I'm going to take this lid stop to my paint supplier he said he may be to tint it with a little purple. A hard machine to color match I've only seen (1) mine

here is a comparison pic

Thanks Lonny for scanning your original piece for reference here is a code that will have the dark blue with a hint of purple.  I'm sure there are few other options I'm going to have a few colors sprayed on a card and choose from those!

The code on the sample is E-1Y190, KX-1.  Brand of paint on the sticker is Valspar or Clark and Kensington it says both.  I'm going to use this code to at the automotive paint store to see if I can cross reference.

Make sure you use a long nap roller when you apply that paint Jared.  It will look a bit bumpy when you first roll it but the finish will lay down as it dries! 8)

That machine is going to be killer!

Installed the new lid and wired everything up.  A few minor adjustments here and there but it's looking near completion .

I ended up having to tap some of the threads for the cap catcher screws which are a normal RH thread on mine.  I heard some people have had threads screws on in reverse.  I used a 10/32" bottom hand tap and 10/32" plug hand tap.  Gives you one tap that is tapered and one that straight .
