Title: New Toy....
Post by: davethebirdman on September 19, 2009, 11:28:58 am

Hi Guys thought I'd share a picture with you of my new toy...

Its a 1930's Novelty Merchantman Crane.. On Old English Penny...

Just got it after a seven hour round trip... Chap I got it from had probably one
of the finest collections of English Early 20th Amusements... Worth thousands all Museum quality.

I'm happy with my newest addition. Just have to work out how to change the grab so that it picks up each time.

Dave

That's really cool Dave.  Were the old English pennies about the size of an american half dollar?  I remember having some pennies as a kid and I believe they were British.  I remember they were pretty hefty.

Dave,

I just saw one of these a few weeks ago in Ohio. Are they rare? It was an original with the shipping box still!!!! Not interested, but not sure what the guy wanted for it. He has over 300 pinball machines.

I remember the cranes at the fair. They had sand in the bottom and they would stick the prizes in the sand. You could never get the dam things to drop the prize over the exit hole. We would end up getting mad and wheeling the crane around as fast as we could to try and break the glass. :veryangry: Never won a prize or broke the glass. I hope you don't rig yours like that.

Thanks for the kind words...

Larry - Yeap the old pennies are the same size as your half dollars.. You knew you had them in your pockets...

Brian - Not sure if they are rare... Have seen a few on Ebay.com not too many over here people tend to hold onto them.
If the machine was in its original box I would think that that would be like finding a V81 that had never vended a bottle...

My machine earnt its living on a travelling fair... Perhaps the most famous English travelling fair so it has a nice piece of history about it...

Oscar - Like the modern cranes they can be fixed so as not to pick up too much. At the moment that's the way mine is set. I have to work out how to make so that every time it goes down it collects something.

Brent - Its cosmetically very nice... Far too nice to restore...

Thanks Guys... Just need a little reassurance... Mrs B is not too keen.

Dave

I remember these as a kid from the yearly fair at the Calgary Stampede in Canada. The floor was full of nickles and we must have deposited 20 nickles for every one we managed to pick up

         Nice wood cabinet Dave!

Hey Dave,
Very nice find!!
Hope you can sort the success rate. Don't recall ever having grabbed anything from those. Lost interest quick.
Maybe time for some small boxes with things inside Mrs. B. would enjoy.

John - Like the idea of slips of paper... Will have to re-adjust the claw though because at the moment it picks up each time... Mrs B would forever have me running around...

Terry - Not mine but exactly the same.. I found this clip on youtube... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-X55fGEQuOM
The Jacobs 50 is alomst there... In fact it made an appearance in the calander this year... Next week the guy comes to fix the refridgeration and once its working ocrrectly (after nearly three years) I'll post it with before and afters....

Thanks Guys

Dave
