Title: New to the Forum
Post by: rayne75 on August 02, 2009, 05:08:53 pm
Hey folks, I'm Tracy. I am a Maintenance Mechanic for Coca Cola Enterprises in West Memphis, Ak. I have worked on various antiques for years such as record players, cash registers, coin op scales, pinball machines, ect and have recently had the cooler bug to bite me hard. I am currently working on a CS 64 E that I have taking up most of the floor space in my garage (to my wifes dismay) and last weekend picked up locally a V39. Here are some Pics!

Welcome to the board, Im 3 hrs west of you near Mountain Home, AR There is a member or two in the memphis area. Ive restored several of the V39s and actually emailed the seller on the machine you bought but missed it by a few hrs. If you have any questions feel free to give me a shout!

Hey Joey,
Sorry to have knocked you out of it, but I sure was glad to get it. The compressor needs to be replaced on it, as it will only cool to around 55 degrees and will not pull down a vacuum very well. I suppose after 56 years, I would not pull very much of a vacuum either :tounge:. Have you ever replaced just the compressor? I would like to keep the original evaporator in the box if possible, but am not married to the condenser. Otherwise the machine is in pretty good shape. It has some surface rust on the front around the ICE COLD logo, but nothing a good body shop could not fix in short order. I paid 500 for it and hope that I can make something of it. The V39 has been a dream of mine for a while! Thanks, Tracy

P.S.Heres a pic of the inside

Hey Tracy,
I am over in Memphis.  I have a couple of machines and some gas and oil collectibles.

Is that the 39 that was on craigslist a week or so back?

There is a wealth of knowledge here so don't be afraid to ask.

Marvin

Yes you can replace just the compressor and keep the evaporator,

Dont feel bad for "knocking me out of the punch" I seen it there for a week and waited to email just curious to see if it was still available. I was gonna offer $400.00 for it.

Tracy,

First off, welcome aboard! The original compressor that came stock with the Vendo 39 was either a Kelvinator or Westinghouse (both were used for the 39) and it was 1/8 HP. The most common size is medium temperature, 1/4 HP. Low temp. compressors are for machines that are made to freeze items and high temp. compressores are for machines designed to keep food cool, more like a fridge.

I honestly dont have any idea what size was used. I had a friend build up the unit for me. If you want his number let me know.

Guys, Thanks for all the help, and the great welcome.  I have found this compressor that I think I will go with for the V39. The major differences are that the original was a 1075 btu and this is a 1007, and the original is a 1/6 hp and this is a 1/4. I contacted one of my old cooler service buddies from Durham Coca-Cola in NC, and this is what he suggested. CHeck it out and let me know what you think: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/4MG93

Don't know what brand this is, but the price is better.  If you have any connections with a HVAC person, you mght be able to get one at a discount through Johnstone or R.E Michael
