Well my hip has gotten so bad I cant stand it. As most of you know two years ago I was in a bad accident in Thailand and I severely broke my hip. Well it has been getting worse and worse and not its time to do something about it. I will be having a full right hip replacement on Tuesday morning (your Monday night). I am a bit nervous but am mostly excited that the pain will be over. Well I just wanted you all to know that I may be quiet for a while. I will be in the hospital for between 5 and 7 days without internet. I am going to go mad!!! Anyway wish me luck and I will let you all know how it goes when I get home.

Good luck Josh!  My boss just had the same surgery after several years of pain.  You won't regret it!

Just take the rehab slow and don't over-do it!

I just went through knee surgery in December. It's no fun but you'll recover quickly and be as good as new. Maybe you can get them to put in a bionic hip and you can take over for the 6 million dollar man. :laugh:

Thanks everyone. I will let you all know how it goes. It may not happen now. All surgeries go before the board and they rejected my surgery. They are a bunch of old idiots that are stuck in their ways. They say a 28 year old is too young to have a hip replacement. That was true 10 years ago but I have been to 4 hospitals and seen over 10 surgeons and every one of them said this is what I need. It is frustrating to say the least. I have a meeting on monday to try and convince them to do the surgery. We will see. 

I bet they'll take your money in the USA...  :glare:

Yes you are too young for a hip replacement IF this was due to normal body deterioration, but your  situation is due to being hit by a van - don't they take that into consideration?

Josh I'd come home if I were you and let it be done pronto.


As for the drs... they must have gone to the same school as the dr I saw for chest pain a while back.    He actually told me women dont have heart attacks its only hormones and wasnt about to tell my hubby to buy me a diamond, book a year cruise or buy me a new house to make the so called pain go away.

So I now see a new dr and still have pains once in a while.

Sorry to hear that they have delayed your surgery as I know how much pain a bad hip can generate.  My boss went through the same problem on the age issue.  She is in her early 50's and several docs told her that they wanted her to wait because she will have a problem down the road if the "replacement hip has to be replaced".  I guess they have no confidence that medical technology will advance between now and then.

She finally found surgeons at the Mayo Clinic who were willing to help her out.  They did the newer minimally invasive procedure this past September and she is getting around fine now.

Yep the minimally invasive surgery is a resurfacing instead of a replacement. I cant do the resurfacing because my problem is that the bone is dead and starting to implode on itself causing pain. The problem with not having it done is not only dealing with pain but one day I will be walking and the bone will fail and break off. Its called Avascular necrosis. The reason I am having it done in Asia is the price is so much cheaper. I am working with a very skilled surgeon at a very good hospital and it only costs $11,000 total for everything. It would be 10X that in the states. I have no insurance and I already had to pay for the first surgery and 45 days in the hospital. Also my pain medication is $375 every two months so over time having the surgery done now will pay for itself. I will just be happy to be able to walk again without pain. I will always have to walk with a cane but I am used to that now so its not a big deal. Thank you everyone for your support. You are all a great group of friends. Now all I can do is pray the doctor will agree with me tomorrow. Lets hope  :hopefull:

Well the surgery was canceled. The doc that stoped it is an idiot. He refuses to allow a replacement to be done on me because of my age. He want to fuse my leg to my hip. What an idiot. That is a barbaric surgery practiced before replacements were available. I will hopefully be going to Thailand next week to have the surgery.

Well I just got the news that I will be going to Thailand on Sunday and my surgery will be on Tuesday. I am going back to the hospital that did my original two operations. It is a wonderful hospital and I am seeing one of the top hip surgeons in Asia. This is great news considering my girlfriend lives there and will be able to help take care of me.  And when she is not there the little Thai nurses are HOT!!! This will be like a surgery vacation!  :biggrin:

Hey guys I hit a few snags on pricing. They gave me a price for the operation and once I got here they said oops its gone up $7K. Well luckily I know the managing director of the hospital and he put a stop to it. I am having my surgery tomorrow morning. Thsi doc says that the bone is not dead so he will try to do a resurfacing. either way they will be ready with the prosthesis to do a full hip replacement. So the surgery is at 6am tomorrow which is 5pm  eastern on wednesday in the USA. If I am awake enough in the evening I will stop by and tell y'all how it goes. Meanwhile it is nice being back in Thailand.

By the way I proposed to my girlfriend and she said YES!!!! So it looks like there is going to be a wedding early next year!

I hope and pray that your surgery goes as planned with no problems and that you have a speedy recovery. Congratulations on the engagement, that's awesome! Let us know how things go buddy.

Great news Josh.... What is the recovery time for that? I imagine they would want to get you moving around pretty quickly...

Just re-surfacing is great news!  Did they powder coat or use hammer-tone?  I guess the compressor was cooling well.  Or was the cord cut so they couldn't test it out?  :biggrin: Sorry, I couldn't resist!

hey everyone. I just wanted to give an update. Today I am feeling so much better. I was able to get up and walk around (with crutches) several time today and did fine. The doctor cleared me to fly home on Thursday. I still hane some muscle and surgical pain but that is to be expected. The good thing is that the joint feels GREAT! This new technology hip resurfacing I got is amazing. It doesn't have the limitations that a replacement has. I can now live a normal life again and can stop walking with a cane once I am healed. Thank you all again for your support. I will keep you all updated.

Hey Josh... how you feeling?

I am doing great! Everyday is better than the day before. Yesterday was three weeks from the surgery. I have one more week on crutches however I think I am going to play it safe and stay on the crutches an extra week. I have to go to to hospital to fill some prescriptions so I am going to go to their medical store and buy some elbow crutches instead of using full crutches. These will be a bit easier to use and more comfortable. They are less supportive but they will work for now. I am healing very well. There is very little pain now. I am so happy that I will be back to normal again soon. Thank you everyone for your concern. I will keep you all updated.
