Title: VMC Dual 27a working value?
Post by: red-hungarian on December 22, 2008, 08:15:03 am
Fair asking price for a WORKING VMC Dual 27a. I just replaced both fan motors. Complete down to cap and coin catchers. It needs cosmetic restoration to bring back it's former glory. Little to no rust. Excellent winter project. I just have too many.

Thanks, John in NC

I can usually pick them up for 400-500 bucks.

Seems like it'd be worth more to part out.

Bottle rack $300, let's say $200
split doors $100 - up to $300, if you were to buy repros. lets say $100
Coin mech has to be worth $75 to $100 with slug rejector. Say $50
Refrigeration another $100-200. Say $100
Cap catcher and coin box another $25
Rollers/guides,gears, another $100
Bare cabinet $50
Bottle bezel $50

Conservatively it's worth $650 $800 as parts isn't it?

I have already decided I won't part it out though. That'd be one less cool thing in this world. We need more "cool things" ;)

You have to remember that people who are buying parts are buying parts to complete machines. One parted out machine might complete several other machines. It would make sense to part it out. These are common machines, 2.5 on the 5 scale. Make some money and buy something you like.

I wouldn't part out a good machine. Too many small parts go unused. I have seen parts on ebay get relisted several times. Drums and coin mechs sell quickly, but the other parts don't always go so quickly. And what about the cabinet. How long will it take to sell it, or are you going to junk it.

Hold on to the machine, or freshen it up and let some guy have a crack a decent deal.

I am an enthusiast doing this because I like these old machines, I am never going to get rich from them, selling, restoring, or parting out. Just my thoughts on the subject.

Looks are everything on ebay. Selling a machine that looks like that is hard. Even if you paint it quickly with a spray can it will sell much faster. You should even describe the paint as terrible and it needs painted but just the fact that it is pepsi blue or coke red really does a lot for a machine. I had a pepsi VMC88 that i bought from Joey. It had been painted white and looked bad. I tried to sell it on ebay and it got no bids. I took a $10 can of blue spray paint and painted the whole machine blue. I correctly described it in the description and said it is a spray can paint job that looks terrible up close. It sold for much more than I expected. Its all about the pictures. Good luck. Please don't part out that machine. Where are you located?

Don't think I'll be parting it out. It'll sit in a corner till I find the right buyer. I just got another great deal on an unrestored 56. They seem to be coming out of the woodwork right now. Just looking to recoup a bit of cash as I have overextended my play budget a bit with the recent deals. The machine is in Chapel Hill NC. I was thinking of giving it a masking tape paint job like you said, throw a couple vinyl decals on it. Describe it as needing a full restore.
