Title: Legit?
Post by: halehouse on October 21, 2008, 05:30:15 am
We put a piece of furniture on Craigslist.  Received the following reply after an initial inquiry. Looking for your opinions. Scams usually say they'll send more money, right? This is for $20 less than what we listed it for. What 'ya think?

Hello,
Good to hear that you still have armoire for sale since you sold the other
item,..Actually i'll like to see closer views of the item if you have some
cos i wont be able to come over to see it, i'm currently at the Bahamas on
Vacation and i'm getting the item for my son who is just coming to town from
the United Kingdom to reside here in the states and i'm setting up an
apartment for him which i'm sure your stuff will make the place look better
I'm willing to pay $430 and i hope you will be able to sell to me for that
price.I'll be sending you a check for the payment and also i will need
yourfull name, address and phone # to send the payment to you and also i
wanna know when you will be around so i can send my shipping company to pick
it up after payment.Hoping to read from you soonest

If they are on vacation in the bahamas, tell them you'll hold it until they get back and pay for it in cash. I wouldn't trust it. It doesn't seem like the usual scam, but unfortunately, you never know anymore...

Sorry, it reeks of scam. GO with Bubba's idea, and tell them you will wait for cash in hand. Besides, if I was  vacationing in the  Bahamas, I'd sure as heck not be surfing  Craigslist

I read that and managed to pick out some phrases that just have that West African tang about them...

I might be too over sensative but if I were you I'd tread carefully...

You could always wait for the cheque to arrive... What normally happens is that the check is made out for lots more than its worth (he's already implied that he will be using a shipping company) my guess would be that he will ask you to cash the check and foward the outstanding balance onto them...

Play it by ear (does that translate??) and see where it goes... Have a look at www.scambaiter.com for more info...

It's worded differently, but if you have time to play the game, tell them sure, and I'll bet he'll tell you he'll send it for more to cover shipping too.. then for sure it's a scam...

I'm playing a guy right now who says he's a buyer for an asian customer, wants to buy a machine for me and pay with credit Card??? so that intriqued me and I shot him a huge price to include "Packaging" and "Credit card fees" ,, if he gets me a card I might just try to run it and see what happens... if it 's legit and I can get cash in hand, I'll let his shipping company come get it..

WHat a world we live in today... Internet is good for alot of things, but nothing beats in person buying /selling at swap meets and shows...

I hope Chicago is good this year

Don't do it, Dan.  This is not a normal transaction.  Heck, after you send him your address, the "shipping company" could come over and clean you out.  Take Bubba's advice.

I bet that is what will happen. The offer is for less, but they will come in with more to pay for the "shipping".  I'm not too dumb. I knew to be wary of offers to send more and refund the difference.  I bet that is where it will go.
Thanks

That's it.  They replied with the following message. He says he can't use Paypal.  I replied and said that I cannot accept payment for the shipping, he would have to pay the shipper directly. If need be I can hold the furniture until he is back from vacation. (Yeah, right).  I should probably just email back and say, "This is a scam. No thanks".

 i will like you to
note that i havent paid the shipping company that will come pick the item up
and i will be adding  the payment to the check i am gonna send to you,so i
will like you to pls help me send the remaining money to the shipping
company once you remove your money because they wont be picking just the
item i bought from you,i bought some other things and they will be picking
them up..I hope this wont cause much stress for you..Once you get the check
i will send the shipping company's information to send the money to.Thanks
for your usual co-operation and also i will like you to remove the Ad and
consider it sold.

Well if I read what you just told us right, you said  it is for $20 Less ?
I would come back and say your $20 short of my asking price .
and  Like Kilroy said cash in hand or let them know it is a cash deal
and the first one to show up with cash get it .

 :censored: smammers anyways

It's a scam! The last few scammers I strung along for awhile. I figured if they can waste my time why not return the favor.

Don't do it! Never give your your address or contact info, without them coming to see it. I have heard of scams like this on craiglist. Heard of one guy giving his address and then he was robbed later that month. Not sure if that is true, but heard that story.

Yes guys, I realize it is a scam. I haven't heard anything back since I said that they would have to come and see it...that I would hold it until they were back from vacation.  It was obvious when they said they would send more money to cover shipping.
