Title: My Selectivend 1B
Post by: Rhettnificent on April 13, 2008, 06:26:29 pm
Less than a week ago I purchased my first soda machine, a 7up Selectivend 1B.  What attracted me to it was it's smaller size and classic 7up logos, especially the raised embossing on the plastic marquee (I guess that's what it's called, feel free to correct me on the lingo).

It's condition is quite excellent, especially for being from the early 60's.  It's previous owner bought it back then and stopped using it by the late 80's I believe.  It seems to be a not-so-popular model as I haven't been able to find any info about it online.

After replacing all the bulbs, ballast and cleaning the years of dried syrup off the solenoid mechs, everything looked promising.  However, here's where the story turns.  The last part I was going to tackle was to clean the 4-bank soda rack.  As I was taking the rack outside to the curb in order to spray it off, my roommate called me back in for a moment and upon my return it was gone!

I can't tell you how disappointed I was to know how close it was to being fully functional, only to have this major setback.  I don't even know really what to do know and I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction.  I don't expect to find a correct part per say, but maybe I can modify a similar 4-bank rack or even cut down a larger one to fit?

Worst case scenario is I'll fabricate something myself.  I'm no metal worker, but maybe I can build something out of MDF.  The Selectivend will live!

Anyway, thanks for reading and I look forward to your advice,
Rhett

p.s.  I'll post a pic or two when I get a chance.

My advice is to move on.......you have plenty more machines available to you!

Yep if you like the way that the machine looks you now have a nice looking refrigerator. Now it can be used for more than just cans. Put some shelves in it and you are ready to go.

Have you taken a trip around to some of the local dumpsters to see
if it may have been tossed in there. : :oh:
 Just a thought

I mean who ever took it probably has no idea what they have
so look around alittle bit first

Thanks for the advice.  I put some signs up around the neighborhood and went to my local recycling shops.  Nothing.

I don't want to abandon this machine as I'm aware of only one other in existence (a Dr. Pepper version the Pennsylvania Gameroom Warehouse was selling as a project).  Not to mention the time invested in cleaning and getting it work.

Re-creating the can rack is not impossible and I'm drawing up the plans now.

In the meantime, here's some pics of the outside.

If you have a picture of the inside rack please post it, one of us may have a "doner" machine that can supply a transplant part..just a thought.

Wow that is very nice. So it's pretty understandable why you would want to
salvage what you have.

Johnie has a great idea!  There is no reason you could not adapt another can
stack of similar size into this cabinet. Your only objective is placing the drop chute
directly behind the opening in your machine.

Boy, that machine is just like 7Ups ad, "crisp and clean."  Square tops are becoming more appealing.  Good luck on getting replacement parts.  Someones got to have a beater around for parts.

Ah Hah! I found an archive shot of my old CVC/SV 50 (Coke)

the first two pic's are the coke sv50/can vendor, the third is from a 7up machine, (same machine, different style racks, both will fit this SV50 chassis.

Yes!  Those look correct johnieG.  Especially, the last one.  I didn't take any before shots, but if anybody has a rack like these, please let me know!

And I agree, this is a great example of a nice squaretop.  Me and my room-mate are putting together a game room with pinball and video arcade machines... so going "square" seems more appropriate than going "round" (even though it's still quite a bit older than my other coin operated devices  )

What a beautiful piece of equipment. WHY would anyone want a rack outta that? Young miscreants I'm sure. Keep us posted on how it goes.

I scraped a machine just like this a couple of weeks ago.

Looks like someone in the Spokane, WA area is selling the twin to your Selectivend 1B, and it looks nice in appearance as well as price!  One almost could be tempted with a $75 price tag...

Oh wow!  Thanks for looking out!  Yes, I'll contact the seller today.  So Creighton, it would be great if you could help.  I'd love to get the whole thing, but I'm not sure how to get it to Oakland.  At the very least, I guess we could ship parts.

If you are in no huge rush - maybe Creighton could get it to San Jose sometime in the future - not too far from Oakland!

Glad to help out, Rhett!     I hope it works out that you can get the machine.  I didn't even realize you were out in that same general neighborhood.  Keep us posted on what happens!

I've called and emailed the number/address... no word yet (fingers crossed though  ).

Yeah, there's no rush... granted, I'm not sure how far Creighton is willing to help... but if he has the means, that would be great!

FYI, the machine is not too big.  I was able to pick mine up in a Honda Fit with no problem.

Let know how the contact with the seller goes. I can help ship the rack or the entire machine.

Thanks a bunch Creighton.  I've made contact and he is currently holding the machine until Tuesday (although I got the impression he could hold it a bit longer as long as I was working on a plan).  Ideally I'd like to have the whole machine shipped... but I guess it could come down to cost.  Any thoughts on how I might get an estimate?

Maybe we should talk on the phone this weekend to work out the details?

Well the S1A off of Spokane Craigslist is in the shop. Very cool machine. Was in a antique shop for the last 15 yrs. These pics aren't very good.

Jim, I will take better for the machine section. Rhett can get you 1B pics. Looks like the difference is 1A has a can opener and a more detailed sign. Holds 116 cans, 0 pre-cool and I'll get measurements and weight. The "Get Real Action..." is classic. First dibs if Rhett just wants the rack :-)

Great SMC teamwork once again!!

Wow, This is incredible!  I would have never imagined running across another one of these in such a timely fashion... if ever.  I certainly came to the right place to ask for help!

A big thanks to GreginTex for finding the machine on Craigslist, Creighton for capturing it, taking pics, etc and Neighbor for helping move it.  You guy's are the best!

No worries, Rhett!  Just glad I could help find something that was needed.  It's definitely a shame your original can rack hasn't shown up around the neighborhood.  This other one is such a cool machine that it's almost a pitty to part it out to fix another.  Darn neighborhood brats!  I think I even have one or two of the old flat top 7up cans that originally came out of that machine stored away somewhere around here!  Something like that would be cool to display with the machine...I know they show up on ebay fairly often.

Update:
Well Rhett sure has the Selectivend gods smiling on him. He found a beater on San Fran Craigslist with the rack.

I now own the 1A.
Need a SV medallion if anyone has an extra.

Big thanks to Greg!! I missed it on CL.

Awesome, Creighton!!  Glad to help add to your collection, and especially glad to know that it will stay in one piece!  I scan Craigslist in the areas where my family lives on occasion to see if there is anything (not just soda machines) that pops up that I'm interested in.  My brother and his family live in Spokane at the base.  Besides, I'm still learning which SMC members are in what areas for when I run across something.
