Title: How to open the box?
Post by: russelltatedotcom on April 06, 2008, 05:33:15 pm
Hi Guys I am trying to replace the T-Stat and cable on my flat top vmc 56 but I can't seem to get the power supply open? The side panel flicked off OK for the Evap motor wires but the main body seems to be clamped tight, I didn't want to force it incase the bakelite shattered anybody got any ideas?

thanks
Russell

you must carefully drill out the center holes/ hollow rivet securing the bottom cover to the shell, then use a long threaded screw & nut to reassemble it.

Just checking here...

So, physically drill out (as in destroy!)with a powerdrill the brass section in the middle?

thanks
Russell

If you're careful, you won't destroy it.
Get a drill bit slightly larger that the hole and slowly drill until the brass ring begins to spin, that's it!
After rewiring, install as before with a ground wire attached to the new mounting bolt/screw.

I am glad I found this. I have something like this where the power cord goes into and I need to replace the power cord. Only difference is that there is a screw on the top of mine. What is inside there anyway? Are they just some terminals in there?

The screw simply secures the junction block to the compressor plate. Remove the screw and yours will look like the one pictured. You could also buy a new wiring harness from one of the sponsors of the site.

Ok so if I do what is talked about above with the drilling out the rivit can I use the screw to hold it all together or do I need a new bolt?

I have also taken a small screwdriver and carefully bent the flange of the brass up all the way around it and tapped it out and rewired and put the brass back in it, clamped the box down and tapped the flange flat again .
