Title: Vendo 39 - new compressor?
Post by: ChadNC on January 22, 2008, 07:43:14 am
Hi Gang,
I have an early Vendo 39 that has a noisy compressor. It starts off with the usual compressor sounds but gets a whine to it as the box cools down. The Vendo 23 sitting next to it is much quieter. Other than the noise it cools great. Since it uses the early style condensing unit with the large condenser and no fan, is it possible to replace the compressor only with a modern unit or do I need to swap the whole lower unit out?
Thanks for your help,
Chad

Check for a noisy fan motor in the 39. The 23 does not have one.

Thanks MD - this is an early 39 without the condensing fan. The evaporator fan up top is quiet and the noise persists when I unplug it...
Any other thoughts?

How about the suspension for the compressor...?
Are all four springs present and possibly adjusted correctly...?
Some people will tighten these prior to a transport and then forget to loosen them again...

Thanks Jim - I checked the mounts last night along with making sure that no line clamps were loose or lines rattling against other parts. It sounds unfortunately like it is an internal noise. It is hard to describle but it is like a rattle/whine noise.

In my garage it is not a problem but my BIL is interested in buying it for his home theater and wants it to be nice and quiet in there.

Chad

If there is one thing that's easy to find, it's a Vendo 39 missing the drum,
so the rest is only good for parts. Swapping compressor decks would be easier
than adapting a modern compressor to your existing system.

Thanks Guys,

We'll see what he wants to do - it may last for a long time or it may lock up tomorrow. The machine is in nice original condition so finding a good original deck is certainly an option.
