Title: one cent deposit box vendo 83
Post by: Larry on January 14, 2008, 01:57:05 pm
I saw this on Ebay.  I thought it was worth sharing.  Has anyone ever run across a one cent deposit box.  Pretty neat concept, but it doesn't make the machine worth two grand.

I bought a nice original one-cent box off eBay several years ago for $40...sold it on eBay about a year later for about $400 - fluke I think, but I'll take it.
There were actually about four different models of one-cent boxes - most times I see them sell for $50-$70.

Quote
I have contracted Restorer of Coke Machine Worldwide and website owner of Coke Machine and they have no knowledge of a one cent deposit box.

It was a because the 1 cent boxes were on double secret academic probation?

Geez, gimme a break.

Did these boxes work on trust or were they actually wired up???

Tom - If you ever see a nice one for $70.00 plse let me know... I'd love one.

Will do Dave!
Haven't seen one lately though - maybe about time for one to show!
Yes - they were actually wired up - a CREM would block the regular coin path until a penny was inserted.

He has 1 offer and I'll bet it's around... $250

This is ridiculous; I guess if I had a machine that had a Vendo Coin Changer mounted on the front, it would be worth $20,000.00... I just added an extra zero because the Vendo Coin Changer is worth more than a penny coin box, plus I've only seen them mounted on machines in brochures so that has to make it even rarer!

I wouldn't mind a deposit box too.  If anyone finds one under $100.00, let me know.

I have one as well that I picked up at the Chicago Show a couple of years ago for $40 as well. I'm pretty much done restoring it. I just sent the mech out to be replated/reworked and when I get it back and installed I will be finished.

To me they are more of an oddity than than an accesory which in turn makes them semi-interesting to me or at least enough for me to spend some time on restoring!

I think they look great next to a machine. A sort of poor man's coin changer.

You see them most often on Jacobs 26, 160 and 35's, I have one Jacobs with a one cent box and another with a 2 cent box..........  but you are right, it shouldn't affect the price of the box much if at all.

Looks very similar the the coin boxes that were found on most early "Kiddie Rides".

I was talking on the phone earlier with a guy from Summit, MS. He called me looking for a V44 mech, which I do not have. Anyway, we were talking for about 30 minutes. He was telling me about some of the stuff he has and stories of old.
He has (1 of 100 made he says) orange juice machines where you fill a hopper with fresh oranges and you can watch the oranges go through an automatic squeezing process as it vends you a cup of fresh orange juice. Also recounted a story of ("I think it was 1961... the boss said "Get rid of all that junk!" and he took 100's of extinct penny boxes to the dump along with a room full of outdated signs with the wrong slogans).

Did you ever see a grown man cry? I shivered at the thought of all this happening. Where is the dump? :oh:

I got his email address and sent an email, so maybe???
I did express interest in seeing his stuff...he sounded older on the phone and even if he was 15 when he was working there, that would put him in his 70's.
Very nice guy...loved to talk about the "old' days.

I love stories like that. I would like to see that Orange Juice Machine as well, it sounds really cool!

I'd love to see the inner workings of a machine like that ! ! !
It would probably be similar to looking at a Vendo Decapper.
A little over engineered and a repair nightmare...

He said it didn't go over well and never "made it". I would imagine it would have been a high maintenance machine - change out the fresh oranges every couple of days and cleaning up sticky orange juice.

Sounds like a mess for sure. Along similiar lines, I have a Vendo brochure that advertises the Vendo 210 Orange Juice Machine that was supposed to vend Tropicana Orange Juice, Has anybody ever actually seen a real machine in person or photos?

It's not a real photo of one, but this was from a brochure...

Talking about unusual machines, there was a company started in the same county I live in that made machines that popped the popcorn, rolled it in carmel and vended it for a dime, I think.  It didn't go well because of the clean-up and other problems, but I have as yet to find one, they were made somewhere around 1963-69.

Wow! That sounds even cooler. I'll have to keep my eyes open for one of those. what wa the name of the company? Was it in Mitchell or Bedford?
