Title: What is this mech? Change Giver on V39?
Post by: SIGNGUY on December 07, 2007, 11:57:18 am
Need a little help on this mech? is it a change giver mech or what ... it's on a V39 late model machine.  Just never seen one and wonder how it works

Yes, it is a small door change-giver mech. Vends on a nickel or dime giving a nickel in change for the dime.
I have three of them - most commonly found on the C-51, late model V-39 and the SelectiVend S-48 & S-96's. NRI also made a change-giver mech for the VMC27, 27A & 33, but I have only seen two of them and didn't get either. I have one in my V-81A (pic in my photo gallery), but I have never seen another 81 with one, so I kind of question it's originality to the machine. It does appear original to me though as I have taken it off and the shaft does not look modified.
I had Steve Ebner (Fun-Tronics) make up some Coin Entry decals (see pic) for them and I am sure he still has 40 or so.
I have been looking for another if you want to sell it.  :hopefull:

Thanks Tom,
I'll load it with nickels and see if it can get it to work...

John,
That little SS metal piece on the hinge next to the mech is called the slide guard and goes with the mech. The corresponding screw on the hinge is removed and the guard slipped over the hinge in the screws location. The S-48 mech did not use this guard and neither did the C-51 or VMC27, etc. It was only used on the small door machines.
I just finished restoring my S-48 change-giver (see pic). It is basically the same mech except the shaft in back is different and it has a taller change tube. The VMC27, etc mech is a little different than these because of the drive gear in the back of the mech. The change slide bar is mounted on the front of that mech. I would like to get one of these also, but I see them once in a blue moon.

A friend of mine, about a year ago, got rid of a 27, with the nickle changer.  They are very cool.  I like the mechanical changers, but like you said, they are not common.

I like them too - they are my favorite mechanical mech.
I have tried to get every one I've ever seen. I have one in my 81A (came with the machine), my V39 (switched out a regular mech for it), and my SelectiVend S-48 (got somebody to part out a S-96 with one).
A guy on the west coast had a restored VMC27 change-giver on eBay 5 or 6 years ago with a $450 opening bid. I don't think he sold it (at least not on eBay) - I wasn't gonna pay that much.
All-in-all I think I've seen 9 total - 2 VMC, 5 Vendo (I got two) and 2 SelectiVend (I got one) style change-givers. They are definately not common, yet cool  8) .

I have one buried away somewhere that I mentioned some time ago Tom. I cannot remember what machine it came from, I want to think I got it out of an early model V-39... At some point, I'll trade for a typical 10 cent mech for my 81B...

Nice job on the resto on the coin mech!

These are cool changers though!

Thanks Jim!
I'll definately take you up on that!
Right now I have twice as many 81D large door change-givers than I do 81A&B small door straight sale mechs and that is 2-0. I have a V39 mech that I could modify for you if I don't obtain one between now and then. I'll even trade you a restored modified V39 mech for it when the time comes (unless you prefer original).
LMK,
Tom
