Title: Age of old 7up sign Post by: G.Pope on October 26, 2007, 07:57:20 pm Has anyone seen this 7up badge sign before. It is the oldest one I have ever seen and cant quite pinpoint the year that it was made. It is about 40" tall and has art deco lettering on it. I would say late 30's or maybe even 1940 at the latest.
Any help would be appreciated Thanks Pope Title: Re: Age of old 7up sign Post by: halehouse on October 26, 2007, 08:35:50 pm I am thinking "Fresh Up" started in the early 40's and continued into the 50's. I have seen one like that with that "banner" across the bottom listed as 1940's, but in the banner it read "Likes You". I would guess early 40's.

I have a similar version of this sign only mine has Stout Sign Company, St. Louis, MO and manufacture date of 1953 centered along the bottom rim. What does the small text in the middle of this sign say... I have seen this version before but don't know the manufacture date. I'm surprised that information isn't stamped somewhere on it... My educated guess would be from the 1940's... Title: Re: Age of old 7up sign Post by: collecture on October 26, 2007, 10:45:53 pm Jim,
I believe the text in the center says: REG. U.S. PAT. OFF. Title: Re: Age of old 7up sign Post by: G.Pope on October 26, 2007, 11:16:18 pm Thanks Guys for your quick replies,
In the mean time, I have done a little research. It says Stout Sign Co. St. Louis, MO Made in USA. This is what most if not all Stout signs say. There is no sign number or date code. Pre-dated coding might be a clue. Just under the "u" and between the 7 and p, it says reg. u.s. pat. off. so it was before the ® came into use. I have things from the 40's that also use it this way. Also, I have this ad that uses the "Fresh Up" and "with" in the exact same type style as mine. It contains the a brown bottle with paper label. I now need to date that bottle, which I thought was the early 1930's. I think that it was between 1930 and 1936 that this bottle was used. In 1936, they went to a painted label and a thinner, not as squat brown bottle. So I know that the sign could possibly be as old as 1930 to ? The last thing I need to know is when they changed the font on Fresh Up. I have things in the early 40's that the Fresh Up was in a different font. I say that sign is between 1930 and ?. With ? being the font change for Fresh Up. any help out there? Thanks Pope Is this jogging someones memory? Title: Re: Age of old 7up sign Post by: G.Pope on October 27, 2007, 09:40:10 am The 7up ad above says the 7up bottling company of Nashville. The company changed its name from the Howdy Company to The 7up Company in 1936. In the ad at the bottom, it has a code 3-3757. Could it be 3-37 or March of 37? The pop was called 7up from 1930 on. All I know for sure is that the Fresh Up on my sign corresponds to an ad that has the same type.
More research... Thanks Gary |
