I called the guy and offered $3000. He said he already had an offer for that amount.
He said he must have had 20 calls this morning on it.
He almost took an $1800 offer, but somebody called or emailed and told him how rare it was.
He had no idea! Who would have done that?  :darn:
I say it goes for $6826.01

I think he will end the action and list it with a reserve of 7000.00. But if not i think it will sell for $ 62.91.00

I almost had this machine for $1800.00 :darn: . I told him it is a rare machine i didnt say how much it was worth but asked him what he would end it for said a local restorer told him it was worth between $1000-$1800. Told me he would end it for $1800 just had to go home and end the auction I guess i before he could get home and do that he was flooded with calls. If only he was home when I called O well.  :darn:  :darn:

the guy obviously had no idea of its value.

just shows you that out there whether in
North Carolina US or South Manchester in
the UK there are still some dream finds....

not that i'm expecting to find any vendo
machine in south manchester england ,

..............................................at anytime.

mind you when i am long gone somoeone
somewhere will have my vendo 81.

if ebay did not exist someone would have
bought that machine for say $2k and would
be telling anyone on this site "wait til i tell
you what my find of the week is"

the listing will be pulled as his customers will
never be able to get hold of him as his phone
will be ringing non stop.

he should have bought a premium rate number,
put it on the listing and put a five minute message
on it, he would have made more out of the premium
rate calls than the machine, [ well maybe not AS much]

all the best everyone from England!

What would it be worth totally restored?

Restored book says $9500. I have seen them sell for about $10,500 fully restored. What he has there is worth about $6500 no more. He will have a hard time getting $9500, in my opinion.

I guess if somebody offered him that much, then they will put a bid in.
It won't be me!

Title: Royal Crown Machine
Post by: Jim on May 09, 2007, 03:57:07 pm
I don't think he'll get $9500 in that condition!

Title: Royal Crown Machine
Post by: halehouse on May 09, 2007, 04:35:03 pm
Interesting to read the new listing.
If he doesn't get $9500, do you really think he will "relist at $100 and go from there?"

Title: Royal Crown Machine
Post by: Seven181 on May 09, 2007, 05:05:06 pm
HA! Dan, you right on! He should have just went with $4500 and let the bidders bid. I will be shocked if someone gives $9500 for that. Restored is worth $9500 not in the present condition.

Post by: MoonDawg on May 09, 2007, 06:24:41 pm
For comparison, some may remember, I also thought I had hit
the jackpot with a 7up VMC 81.  Let the auction run....it sold at
$4200.  :darn:
The RC is rarer and I think that $5500 to $6500 is the best
offer he will get, unless he restores it .

I was actually the second bidder on the cancelled auction. i was hoping it would just kinda slide through.

Post by: Seven181 on May 09, 2007, 06:43:55 pm
They are getting harder and harder to find. I just picked up my 81 a few weeks ago. Love it! I have the 7up one, of course but they are hard to find!

Actually--I've used a similar strategy when I ebay stuff that is high dollar or "wow" material within a hobby. I was talking to Harley Yee, a rather important comic book broker, some years ago and he said that a great way to get a price to really pop on an important book is to list it once with a rather unrealistic reserve, wait a week and list it again starting at a buck with no reserve and watch the price rocket. I've done it a time or two and it seems to work--get everybody salivating, then let 'em stew, then watch 'em get carried away! Not a good way to buy, though.  :p

As a matter of fact, as I think of it--I can think of one time the final price with that method ended up half again as high as my original reserve. Of course, it only works if the item is legitimately rare and desireable--and if another one shows up on ebay anytime close before--or worse, during--your play it sinks the whole thing.

This poor ol' seller listed this old machine for $600.00.....
with no reserve this morning !

He listed his phone # so every wanna-be RC 81 owner
......called him and got him excited! He thinks he just got rich.

       I see no strategy here.......just greed  :D

Post by: centech on May 09, 2007, 08:11:32 pm
Oh, no doubt--he's an overly excited and greedy cuss. But I'm saying--if he does what he says after the machine, obviously, doesn't sell for the 9500 and goes back up w/NR--that's when it'll get interesting. It'll almost surely bring more than it would have in this morning's $600 NR auction--and could end up a lively topic of conversation here in a couple of weeks. Or not.

Post by: centech on May 09, 2007, 08:13:30 pm
But to do it right, he should have listed it now with low starting bid, high reserve. Let the people bid at least, for heaven's sake.

Feh, I'll watch just to laugh when the person who told him it was worth $9500  never comes back.

The guy that told him 9500.00 will disappear like Bin Laden.  I don't think it will even get 6000.00
If I remember right the last couple of really nice ones listed on greed-bay didn't make much more than 5000.00 and the reserve was not met.

This guy has his own strategy, he now has a bidder on it!

Now it's up to us fools to outbid the $9500.00..  :happydrinkers:

I hope he is bidding on his own auction and gets stuck with the ebay fees on a $9,500 auction :D

Title: Royal Crown Machine
Post by: MoonDawg on May 10, 2007, 10:20:07 am
SERIOUS bidders do not show their hands this early in the auction.

Title: Royal Crown Machine
Post by: centech on May 10, 2007, 10:25:07 am
Yeah, I'd agree with that. Way too early to show your hand on an online auction--unless it's that 9500 guy that called him before. We'll know one way or the other, cause he doesn't really know any other venue to sell the machine. It's too bad, I was looking forward to that next NR auction. Ah well....wasn't gonna be mine nohow.   :;):

Hey guys,

watching this thread develop from over the pond has
been real fun and kinda interesting you know

people are kinda upset that they didn't get this mean
rare machine for just $1800........................................

then hey, he's kinda greedy for wanting more than the
soda guys book price,[lets say $4-$7k] for this machine in its present condition...................................................

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

seems kinda harsh guys!

my old learned finance director, [many years ago], told me, items sell for what someone is prepared to pay for
it, if two people are prepared to pay, then the price goes higher, til one drops out.

i have no idea what this machine will sell for, neither
does the seller, thats his problem, [but nice problem!].

One thing is for sure, it will keep the forum lively!

and when the next royal crown 81 turns everyone
will be saying

hey remember the last one that sold for  $XXXX or
maybe should that read $XXXXX?

KIND REGARDS

GP in England

i am kinda busy grinding off my coca cola letters and
stirring my yellow paint and .....................................
"wheres my bondo"

Right you are Ginger. We need to keep this interesting!

We need a few fictitious E-bay bidder names to drive his bid
price up at the end to about $9.5 million and film him as he wets his pants  :D

Darn it Moondawg, I almost shorted out my monitor  reading your post and taking a swig of Coke at the same time.
And GP, you make valid points, and i'll comment on those as soon as I finish wiping up my desk...

I would love to see someone here bag this machine.  Then we could all share in the restoration pics all the way through...  That's the closest I'll ever get to an RC 81  :D

I can not believe someone put in a bid of $9500. Maybe a friend of his, that he will not hold him to the price to drive up the price for others??? I will be shocked if he sells at this price, not even restored!!!

Post by: Kilroy on May 13, 2007, 03:52:28 pm
If ever I needed proof there is a direct relationship between greed and stupidity, I'll pull this auction and remind myself. And excuse my ignorance, but if Ebay pulls your auction on  rule violation, you can can resubmit it under the same auction number? I've seen i these items re listed, but always with another auction #.

Good Luck if you go for it Terry.
