Wouldn't it be cool to take this, repro it, and insert your own name?

Yea, it would be cool.  Especially since I wasn't born until almost 20 years after the date on the certificate!    :D

I like it.  We can reprint with the name and date blank and
members can fill them in themselves.

That is cool. I was going to bid but sI ee that Glen beat me to it. Glen bid in confidence I have bought several items from this seller. He is a good guy.

I can see this developing into the SMC Certificate of Authenticity for those that have passed our rigorous testing process!
SMC is an accredited education institution, isn't it...?

On another note, this is a very cool piece of machine history ! ! !

Ok I've got it!  Now just how should I get it copied?
As you can see it's on a slightly yellow paper. I just want
to delete the persons name to use as our master copy.

If I take it to a print shop, could there become a legal issue that needs to be avoided?

Glen,
You just need to get it scaned. Then you can send the scan file to me or anybody with PhotoShop to delete the name. The new file could be posted for folks to add their name or I could do it and print and mail a copy for anybody.

Glen,

Scan the document at least 150 dpi with 300 being preferred.
You won't be able to email because the file will be too large!
It probably would best to recreate the document in a vector based program such Adobe Illustrator. Match the fonts and import the bottle and green colored equipment... Edit the name as necessary and print; everyone's an offical soda machine service/repair man now...

Congrats on acquiring this document Glen, this is pretty cool; I have never seen one of these before.

Well I had it copied to disk at 150 DPI but I don't have access
to adobe illustrator.
I'm surprised that the file is too large for e-mail. What next?

Just an update for everyone...

I was able to scan the certificate and will be researching the font(s) used and then move into Illustrator to recreate the document. It would probably look best if printed on old looking paper stock too!

In a few days, I'll post part of the cert for direction from some of you that may know the font off the top of your head... Well, maybe Eric can share his expertise...

When I had this scanned, I had planned to re-create
this document onto orginal looking yellow paper.
Had to search the store quite a while to find a close match but it still doesn't look as authentic as the original. This post may lead to a paper search  :suspect:

OK everyone, here's a scan of the certificate with a border included for looks since it actually came as two pieces, the certificate and the border lays on top...

If anyone can identify the font used in the title and name, it would greatly simplify things for me... I would like to keep this as authentic as possible!

Thanks

Looks like the font in the arch is compressed a little too.... to make room...
I've gone through all my fonts here at work with nothing dead on.
The upper case C and R  seem to look different than the rest of the upper case.... the M, L and H look to be more “scripty” (my own word there) :D
I'll keep looking... I have a disc somewhere burried at home with 2000
fonts.... I'll look through its hand written type fonts...

Title: Repair School
Post by: Jim on May 23, 2007, 10:45:18 pm
The "h" in Hanson doesn't even look to be capitalized... A typo...?
As far as I can tell, it appears that all the caps look like slightly different fonts but in the same family...
 :darn:

Title: Repair School
Post by: Eric on May 23, 2007, 11:02:16 pm
Look at the lower case a in Repair and the one in Leonard
2 different fonts and the H does look to be lower case...

You may just want to find a font and create it your own way
It will still have the feel.....
I'll still do some looking here unless there is a rush....
does the bottle and art need to be redrawn?... I could do that and the sig?

Oh and I'm working on the Dr Pepper decal just a little update there.... :)

Title: Repair School
Post by: Eric on May 23, 2007, 11:03:58 pm
We could use the bottle art from the Sunburst sign we repro'd... that is
from the 40s and it's done ready to go....

I currently have it scanned as a psd file, but haven't brought it into Illustrator to redraw/trace it...
You might be the best for this Eric...
We possibly could do the same for the title and then convert to paths to aid in keeping the original text, then get something close in the way of a font that we can use for the new names...

Title: Repair School
Post by: MoonDawg on May 24, 2007, 09:42:19 am
I don't know how anyone else feels about this, but any font
that is even remotely similar is good enough for me. On the other
hand, am in no hurry either.

Title: Repair School
Post by: Jim on May 24, 2007, 03:09:21 pm
I'm just one of those people that pays attention to details...

The hard part is how I'm going to recreate the typewriter depression look of the text when you print it on an inkjet printer!!! JUST KIDDIN'

And your right Glen, in the end this re-creation will be close, but not an exact duplicate which sits fine with me. I would like to make it as close to the original as possible for everyone...

Just wanted to update everyone...

I do apologize for my tardiness on this and will focus in the coming week to get this done. I'm going to consult with one of my graphics instructors tomorrow for the best course of action...

I've been spending my spare time developing some new site concepts for SMC and may be able to share a sneak peek at the end of June/early July...  I will start a new thread for input on the likes/dislikes of the elements, other than our Discussion Areas, of SMC, such as Classifieds, Auctions, Newletters, eCommerce, Banner Adverts, the Soda Machines Listings, etc, etc...
Look for this in a couple of weeks...

Thanks again for your patience!

Update on the Certificates:

I'm currently waiting for a CD of Fonts from a friend to hopefully acquire the correct font used in the title of the Repair School Certification. Once this arrives, it's only a matter of minutes to complete this task. Otherwise, I'm going to buy the font to get this behind me and everyone can enjoy there new certificate. Oh yea, I almost forgot about the three part test that I need to send to everyone that wants a certificate ! ! !  It's approximately one hundred questions that I have extracted from service manuals... (just kidding)

Which brings me to my next question, how would you like me to distribute the document...? Before we get to this though, I'll need a list of names so I can create the customized certifications; then I can distribute the file! My concern is a format that everyone will be happy with; however, I may be leaning toward PDF for this...

Open for discussion...

I have to apologize... I'm the one Jim is probably waiting on...
I had a font disc with 2000 fonts thought it might have a font close or the exact... well.... I can't find it... a buddy gave it to me a couple years ago when I got my DELL and I loaded a few cool fonts and haven't used it since... I have looked everywhere... including my 9 year olds game discs in case it got stuck in there... you never know?
I'll keep looking and calling around....

I'm going to revisit this next week after things have smoothed out with the New Site launching...

This does bring a good question though, and I don't mean to split hairs on this as it's been long enough for delivery, but should I do the personalization for each one with their name and birth date(or some other date) OR just leave the date as is...?

Title: Re: Repair School
Post by: Jim on August 08, 2007, 10:14:43 am
I'm not up on my paper weights, but I would say the paper weight was a little thicker than 20 lb... The major difference is that the original was very slightly textured...
Glen may be able to clarify better since he has the original...

OK folks,

We're ready for delivery!
I'm utilizing Adobe PDF format for distribution. so hopefully, everyone that will be receiving one has Acrobat Reader...

Now, are we going with the original date or, as suggested, the more recent date 11/07/2000...?

And lastly, who is eligible and I'll need first & last names for correct spelling...

Look what you created Dan

Earlier I stated that I didn't mind if the font's were not the same, but after seeing the finished product I am so glad Jim followed through to get the exact match.  :happydrinkers:

I took the original to a paper supplier and the best i could find was this 24# linen type paper colored Chatham Tan. It has the original rough texture not the smooth finish that is so prevailant in copy stores.

My first printout of this document was on white shiny paper. When I found the yellow paper and printed.....it looked so aged, the white paper looks so new  :glare: Trimmed the document down to 8" X 10" to fit the frame as the original was!

Here is the original next to the finished product! And thanks so much Jim!

At any rate, there are still other members I'm awaiting info from so I can upload your personalized cert...

At the end of Aug., I'll be removing all of them from the web site, so be sure to download yours...

Seems to go back and forth. I am getting this message again:

You need to Login.

Maybe it depends on the computer I am using.

I think everyone associated with the Certificates has downloaded theirs...
I'll be removing these over the weekend...

It was a fun but challenging project, what can we do next...?
