The top of the machine is in bad shape and I think the asking price is way to high. I offered 100 bucks. What do you "Pros" think?  I need this machine for parts anyways.

Thanks for your help

Steve

Ok, let's bring Josh into this to be sure but I think you
have the real CSS-8-64, which has a crank at each bottle
gate.   The one in the auction is just a regular old CSS-64,
but as what the guys were saying, buy one for $100 and
swipe the compressor and the sign frame.
Thats what all the pro's that I know do  :D

they will sell it for 128 and change to cover ebay fees and broker fees. What do you think?

OK SEE if the darn thing get's cold  and if it hold's that cold
and if it does then  JUMP ON IT  ,  there is your compressor
and any other thing you may need . Then you can turn around and
sell the parts  like  the bottle door, coin door  bottle rack, shelve
 and so on  .

I got a very nice one just like it for $75. Looked like it was inside most of it's life. :)

A working machine for $75 is a steal.  Even at $150 (assuming the broker fees are less than 10% of the list) and you'll still be ahead of the game IF the compressor works.

I picked it up off a cash deal from ebay. The machine was in way better condition than the photos  showed :D

I like these machines alot. They are small, have a lighted door and some have a lighted sign. They vend beer bottles, soda cans, and water bottles. They also have a small vending door. Great machine

Ok your other machines are USS-64 meaning Universal slant shelf machines meaning it will vend about anything. The one in the auction is a CSS-64. It is a bottle only machine. Alot of the parts are the same. the cooling stsyem is the same and the coin door and anything behind the coin door is the same as your machines. However this machine has different shelves a different bottle stack and a completely different cabnet. Under the woodgrain on this machine the door is painted black. if you can get it for under $200 and it cools I would say go for it. You can sell the shelves for about $5 to $10 each on ebay and the bottle stack will bring about $25. There are also alot of other small parts that you can sell so you will basicall be able to get a free cooling system. Sounds like a good deal to me. Or this machine looks like it might clean up. You might want to keep the machine as is and use it for bottles only. Just set a bottle crate on the top and you will never know the top is messed up. This CSS-64 is a G model and was made during the same years as your woodgrain USS-64.

Thanks loman, you are the man. How could you tell all that from one photo?

You say it will vend bottles, does that include beer and water bottles or just small soda bottles?

I have a bunch of coke wood crates too. Thats a great idea

Your welcome. i have had a ton of these in the past. Where do you live? I see that that auction is in Jascsonville. When I had most of my machines I lived in daytona. The CSS-64 will vend about any type of bottle. The only restriction is the bottle diameter. The new plastic bottles that are in the new machines are too fat. However they do sell longer thinner plastic bottles in the stores and the do vend just fine. On your machines the bottle is dispensed by turning the knob on the side of the bottle stack. On this machine it vends by actually grabing the neck of the bottle and pulling it through the vend gate. that is why it wont vend cans. They do fit but it is really hard to get them out. If you have skinny fingers you can pull the gate out with your hands and pull the can out that way but it is hard.

I started to remove the wood grain sticker and look what I found.

I can't remember but I think I might have a part that you might want. It is the the black piece that the coin bezel connects to. I think I have one that is polished aluminum. It looks alot better. i might even have a chrome coin bezel. I won't be back home untill August but if you remind me I will try and dig it out. If I can find them they are yours.

I am thinking about painting the black door red. What do you think?

I started to clean the inside of the machine today

I removed the compressor and took some pics of the wiring so I will know how to put it back together

Gave the deck a good cleaning with a brillo pad.

The inside of the machine is in great condition. Too bad the outside needs a paint job

I removed the stack and gave it a good cleaning too. Thats all for now

I wouldnt paint the door liner red. It is thermal plastic and paint will not stick well. It is also is in a really humid and cold on the inside of the machine. With the door liner being flexable the paint will break off.

Ok that makes more sense. It is a small pannel. try it the worst thing that can happen is you don't like it and paint it black again. I personally dont like all of the black on these machines. I think it will look alot better red. While you are at it I would paint the black piece behind the coin bezel white. It looks really good that way. I would also think about painting the sign frame and the black trim. You can also go to a local sign shop and have a new sign made for your machine. I think the white sign with red Drink Coca Cola looks alot better.

For example this is the exact same model as your machine. It is a CSS-64-G. It was just made a few years earlier than yours.

Title: css-8-64 on Ebay. Whats a good offer?
Post by: loman4ec on April 13, 2007, 08:09:58 am
What do you mean you want one? You have one. The machine I posted is just a different paint scheme than yours and has a different sign. I sold a fully restored cavalier CS-64D which is a much earlier model for $1,300 on ebay last year. I think it went for a little more than it was worth. You rarely see them go for that much especially on ebay but it was a sweet machine.

Your in a good place for it. That is mostly what I found in Florida. With some paint and a new sign yours can look exactly the same. Just to show what paint can do here is a before and after of the same machine as yours that I did.

funtronics. They have an icon on the main page. they do not have a web site but you can call them and order a catalog. It is $7 but well worth the money. They have a ton of stuff for your machine and they are the only company licensed to reproduce Coke decals.

I usually ran ads in the Daytona News Journal and I ran ads in the pennysaver. i always had better luck from the newspaper. It is expensive but worth it. I did have alot of luck from Craigslist also. Just always run your ads in the collectables section anywhere you advertise. Don't run them in the wanted section. No one checks the wanted section.

got some work done today.  I picked up a new orbital sander and smoothed out the top of the machine

Taped off the top

then to test the color. It came out pretty close.

If I have time tomorrow I will scuff the top again and spray down primer. I just wanted to see how the color matched. I plan to spray the whole top in primer then paint the entire top red, followed by the white stripe. I am also going to paint the white side stripes too. Please throw your suggestions at me because I can use any tips right now

Dupli-color Auto Spray

color Flash Red

5oz can cost 5.99 at pep boys

They sell the same paint for paint guns and I am thinking it may be cheaper to go that route if I decide to paint the entire machine. This stuff wont chip either.

Does funtronics sell the side decals to this machine? I may just paint the whole thing and clear coat it.

Don't get too far ahead of yourself. Why not see what results
you can get on the top of this machine. When you find out how
difficult it really is to achive a nice finish........you may think twice
about shooting the rest of this machine.  You will soon have a
room full of machines that will need a little paint here and there.

It is strongly suggested at this point to continue to sand the
entire surface down to metal before primer and paint.  The top of
that machine is level with your line of sight. You will see craters
and bumps after you spray your color.
The spray gun will allow you to mix paint material with a catylst
and will have a hardcoat glossy finish that will be chemical
resistant.  No doubt the spraycan is quick and easy but that paint
won't take much abuse.

Here is an update

I bought a belt sander since the orbit sander was not doing the job. I used the orbit sander as a finish sander

Here is the top with 40 grit

I smoothed it out with 120 grit and gave it a coat of auto primer

first coat of red

Tomorrow I will apply the second coat

on a side note we are having extreme smoke due to wild fires in Georgia. The news is saying 19 acres is burning.  Today at noon you couldnt see 50 feet in front of you due to smoke

Thats smoke in the pic not clouds

Got the top finished and the stripe on the top and sides. I also repainted all the black trim

Not bad for the first time huh?

I just found 2 more css-8-64's.  I am going to stock pile these because I have a feeling they will fetch a good price in 5-10 yrs

I think it looks good.  It really comes down to what your expectations and desires are.  For me, I don't need a showroom finish, but I understand why many here are looking for that or very close thereto.

You might have seen this mentioned before, but be careful with the clear coats in a spray can.  They can sometimes cause bubbling.  Try a test area first before you go to town on your machine.

Title: css-8-64 on Ebay. Whats a good offer?
Post by: SquareTopCollector on April 20, 2007, 07:44:55 am
I think using the auto spray paint is much better than what you can buy from the hardware store. To give you an idea you need to apply pressure with a screw driver to scratch the finish.  The clearcoat came out very nice as I checked it before going to work. It came out so well that it blends in with the factory paint job. I plan on painting the sides soon as well. Where can I find the sticker decals for the sides?
