Title: cavalier c-51 question
Post by: SquareTopCollector on April 05, 2007, 04:22:29 pm
I found a cavalier c-51 today with missing parts on the coin mech cover and the ammo belt was missing too. I couldn’t tell if the compressor was intact or working but the lady who owned the antique store said she will have it moved to a location in a few days so I can check it out. Only one dent from what I could see and it had surface rust.  Asking price is 425.00 which I feel is high.  Is it possible to buy a new ammo belt?  I think I need to keep looking for another machine

I think the price is high since it's missing major components!  The "ammo belts" pop up on greed-bay from time to time but are also expensive in some cases.

I told the owner that the belt would cost as much as the machine.  Do you think 150 would be a good price? Ammo belts are not reproduced are they?   I am just looking for the right round top to restore. I already passed on the vendo 110 so I will keep looking

The ammo belts aren't repro'ed and when they do appear on Ebay,  bidding is like feeding time in the Kalahari.

Patience  young padawan, there are machines out there,

I've owned two C-51's - both complete.
I wish I'd kept the 2nd one as it had a chrome trim between the red/white (similar to a 44 trim).
I've only seen one other like it.
I paid $550 max for both of mine.

on E-bay for $1050.00.

The right machine will come your way but you may
want to change your name slightly before then  :D

I like the all red c-51.  Coke repainted them with a white top around 1955.  Mine turned out pretty good.  It was my first restoration.  It was painted Pepsi blue and had a space to accomadate the larger Pepsi bottles.  I removed the space and brought it back to it's original glory.

Well after seeing a working c-51 in good shape sell for 510.00 on ebay, should I print out the ebay sale and bring it to the seller? They were asking 425.00 and the lowest they would go was 325.00 which IMO is still to high. The machine is in an antique store and it was behind some furniture. I could open it half way to see it was missing the ammo belt, Fan, vending handle, and cooling unit. The shell was in great condition and only had minor surface rust. What would be a good offer?

here is the link to the ebay sale

I agree with Moondawg. Don't buy something just to buy it. It will cost you double what the machine is worth to complete it. If the entore cooling system is gone you will have to find a replacement. the 51 uses a unique cooling system where the evaporator is in the back of the machine so if it is missing you will have to find another 51 to replace it with. Also you are looking at $300 to $400 to replace the ammo belt. Another deal will come your way. Just be patient. If you really want to get some machines I suggest you run an ad in the local newspaper. It worked for me. I bought more than 50 or 60 machines in two years from a newspaper ad and craigslist ad.

I've got  a C51  and I still have not restored the darn thing ,  It's not like it is missing any thing , I 've rechromed all the chrome  it is half way broke down, Every time I look at it, I look for something else
to start working on   :O .  My opinion those are a pain in
the :censored:   and they really don't work well in the game room because all they can take is the small coke bottle's .
maybe next year it will get done( then it will be just a show peace at the office)     :O

Well if thats the case 98% of your roundtops are out, 56, 81 110s all vend bottles. If I understand correctly a 44 or 88 an be adapted to vend one or the other.

yes, a great hobby but I will be moving several times over the next 4-5 years and I just dont have it in me to build a reef just to break it down again. I sold everything at pennies on the dollar. I still have my equipment minus the tank so that’s all that matters

The round top 56's, 81's and 110's will vend most size bottles with the only real limitation being the diameter of the bottle.
Virtually all pre-1960 machines were made to vend bottles.
Some only vend the small bottles, but all shelf type machines can handle various size bottles.
Square tops can have a can stack in it and some models (like yours) can vend both.

P.S. Cool reef!
