I thought I would introduce myself, Im Frank from Independence, MO. Ive been prowling this board for awhile and it has answered alot of questions for me. It has been a great resource. I now have a couple questions about a machine I just picked up I have a CS 72 that Im going to get painted for my gameroom that I have finally getting done with. I called a local body shop to see if they were interested in the job. He told me he was and that he had one of them old coke machines and that he would sell it. I drove over that day and saw that it was a V56, I offered him $800 and he kinda hedged at that and said to call him back after he did some checking. After he checked (internet,ebay etc.) he said $1500 bottom dollar. He has had it for 30 years and painted it a long time ago. The coin mech and refrig. still works good. No rust inside or out. Well, I went ahead and bought it. I did some checking and although Im not even close to being an expert I thought it was a fair price. Did I do OK as far as what I paid for it ? After I got it home, I noticed that the the front door and body dont line up where the trim is. Ive seen other pics of 56s with the same problem. Ive tried adjusting the latch on the body side and it made the machine almost impossible to open. Any suggestions? Ive attached pics. I've never seen a complete, rust free V56RT sell for $800. Lowest I've seen on eBay is $1100 - $1200 for an all original unless it is from an idiot BIN seller. You might have been able to talk him down a bit from $1500 though. It doesn't look like a top notch paint job - he painted right over the main door gasket. You can get new gaskets from the resident parts suppliers. May not be a great deal, but I still don't think it is a bad deal - you didn't have shipping! Title: Hi from Missouri & V56RT quest. However for a body shop guy, you think he could have done a better paint job on it, at least mask some of the pieces. You will have to do some work on it to make it a real nice machine, almost there though. I like these machines, maybe even better than my 81 (smaller). Title: Hi from Missouri & V56RT quest. that you will most likely also need to replace the plastic inner liner on the main door. It will break all around the edges where the screw holes should be and set you back another $100.00 You could use a razor blade to cut through the paint, then peel it off the gasket as the rubber was too oily for paint to stick to. It should then clean up with laquer thinner until restoration time. You also need a crank handle, but otherwise a nice machine. You will need to put some more money into it to get it looking real good . As far as the painter I would not use him , If this is the quality of work that he did on his own machine , You really don't want him to paint your other machine. Find a differant painter. I agree with Glen, a little time and acetone you can clean that gasket up until you need to replace. Letter the embossing a buff and a shine and you are ready to go buy some bottles...

I think you did ok on your machine. In the last year the price has came down on the 56RT. Why? I have no idea. Two years ago they were bringing 2500.00 unrestored. I'm just glad I was able to get me one. Mines a keeper. As everyone else advised for a 100 bucks you could have it looking really good. Just make sure your painter doesn't paint your gaskets on the C72. Ha-Ha.. Title: Hi from Missouri & V56RT quest. They are a great size. I think you did fine on the price. They are also hard to find with the glass door.

I just really wasnt sure how I did. I really appreciate all the replies. Now I feel better about. I'm sure there a better deals out there. But they are probably very uncommon.
Plus, Ive seen 81s in about the same condition around here before. People want a lot more money for them than what I payed for this. It seems that the 81's are more common and bringing more money. He did paint the gasket, the paint has been easy to remove. That is a screw driver on top of the machine. I was trying to get the door adjusted so the trim pieces line up. he asked about the door alignment... is there anything a guy can do "POST" body work and paint, I know there are things to do before final restoration, but is he stuck with it the way it is? I have a similiar issue, hence why me asking. John |
