Title: Sure has been quiet around here lately???
Post by: SIGNGUY on March 12, 2007, 02:11:56 pm
Sure has been quiet lately on the board. So, thought I'd through something out... just to get some conversation going... What is your Spring Project? Machines, Shops, Trips, Other Hobbies or interests??

Mine, I have several machines and pumps to start stripping down and get ready for body work/paint/restore. Gonna Build a New Garage/Shop out back for my stuff and to store my Car in the winter so I can have my garage back next winter for my daily drivers. Then have to build the kids one of those big wooden play sets, with swings, slides, climbing walls etc..
Fall will be here sooner than I want!!

What you got going on?

I agree.  It's been quiet.  Right now, the Mrs. and I have started finishing off the basement and getting ready for spring in general.  The last of the snow ( :hopefull: ) is melted, so it's time to get the mower ready.

Well... working on that Barber Pole... just buffed the aluminum supports
and my right index fingure knuckle...! :censored:
Found a guy that sells Marvy glass for $75 that's about half what the Marvy site (Marvy sells them for around  $135) or anyone else sells them for...so if you need a glass for a pole get
hold of Mike Thomas at zmed@comcast.net
After that I' think I'm going to frame my 1957 and 1959 Coke calendars....
then start to work on one of my coolers (7up junior)

Doing some art work trade off for a friend who will paint my Bennett gas
pumps so hopefully I'll have them done too this summer....
So a pole, a cooler and a couple of Bennett 700 pumps is my goal for the summer..
Will try and stick with it and post them this fall.... we'll see...
who else?....

Finally got all the wiring done in the walk out basement, on to the insulation and sheet rock. I just built one of those wooden  kids playground sets from toysrus, a hole Saturday, three buddy's and a 30 pack and it's done. :happydrinkers:  Filling the urge to restore another pop machine , no time yet.  :darn:

I just tore down my Westinghouse WC60MD - that should keep me busy for the summer.  :D
I wish I knew a good refrigeration guy that was local.  Just thinking out loud...  :happydrinkers:

Yes, it has been very quiet around here.

Hey Eric, did you finish the home project (porch?) that you were working on?

Bob

Have 2 more 6'x7'x8' containers to pack. Should be moving into the Spokane house next week. Then unpack 4 of the cubes and a 24' Uhaul worth of boxes. If I survive that will start having fun setting up the shop and exploring a new town.

Most of the forums that I go to have been quiet the past few weeks.
I've been helping some friends fix up a house they bought.  Last week I could hardly walk for a few days after laying down hardwood floors.
Also spent some time sprucing up the bikes.  Gonna start hitting the trails again starting tomorrow after work (didn't feel like going out today since I had to get up at 3:15am to drive a bus load of kids to Indy and back!).

I have a Cornelius chest to work on (I know, not the most desireable cooler, but something cheap to tinker with) down at my parents' house and a candy machine and stand that I want to redo that is here.  We have been working on converting our basement to a home theater with more of an actual theater feel.  The "concession area" includes our Vendo 63 and popcorn machine on a cart.  Most of the signs were moved to another room.

Last Wednesday I was one of about 30 people to tryout for the Nationals Presidents' Race at RFK. They are choosing 12 to share duties. I haven't heard as of yet if I was chosen, but if I am I will be committing to half the home games this spring/summer.
Here is a link to what I am talking about:

were getting through it. ( some of you know )
The projects the wife has for me, New basement windows and a gas fireplace downstairs and I think
there was talk about a retile in the bathroom .
As far as my project list,  get this Selectivend 64
done  then either start a Cav. 64 or a Ideal 55  :O
Then I think I maybe roped into a tear off of a roof  :(

But I think we will be staying around to deal
with this family problem for this year.

Ahhhh... the porch thanks BobK for that sore spot! Ha
As I might have told you all last year our house is about 90 years old
is our first house and we thought it would be FUN  fixing it up....
Well 9 years later... I hate it... then I love then I hate it again...
We tore the old porch off (my brother in law pulled it off with his truck
after we cut the rafters and pulled all the supports and bolts)
That was the fun part...well my dad is a structural engineer. We shot
all the corners, angles blah, blah and put the walls up.... looking good....
While we where setting the rafters for the roof he said “Now you know the house has settled over the years¨.... not thinking anything of it we
continued to work but at the end of the day as I was putting things away
in the shed I turned and looked... The porch appears crooked!!!!!
It's not.... the house had settled but the porch looks about 4 inches off and when the porch roof is overlapped with the rest of the roof it looks off..
So we're going to adjust the new roof to follow the house roof line...
So folks the walls are straight but I'm gonna build the roof to follow the house roof. :darn:
Thats' were my Quikold money is going.....
Now as Tax Refund draws near... She has her eye on a new kitchen floor...
 Will it ever stop.... :hopefull:

I've been really swamped in my shop playing catch up. I'm putting the finishing touches on a C55 and starting a on a V81B. I also have a couple of sq. top 56's to build. One in coke and one in "Oakland Raiders". This should hold me over til the middle of summer. I also just picked up a 73 Honda CR250M Elsinore dirt bike that I plan on doing a 10 point restoration on this winter. I am going to start racing it in the vintage mx and grandprix races starting next Feb.

As of right now I'm juggling a few different projects. On the hobby side I've been working on restoring my Vendo 56RT and hopefully that should be done by mid to late Fall.

I'll also be helping MCarter hang his Chicago Coin Bandbox and get it hooked up to his juke, that should be a fun one! :D

I'm also in the process of re-engineering a nichrome-60 wound ceramic heating element for my Popperette Popcorn Machine. while doing some initial testing on the machine after I got it I succeeded in blowing the ceramic insulator apart. After some failure analysis, it turned out that I had only dealt the final blow to it. The insulator had suffered some trauma well before my time and already had some signifigant cracking and was only being held together by the nichrome.

I'm also in the process of finishing my 1520 sq. ft. basement. As of last weekend I have all of the perimeter framing up and am now starting on the interior walls. To boot, I'll be painting my daughters room soon to match her decor choice, the Indianapolis Colts! Oh yeah, I almost forgot! Then we'll be getting the entire interior of the house painted! We've only been in it for 5 months now and the speed at which things are getting done is breakneck.

Brian, Looks like a big project on the basement. I noticed the basement walls. are those just thesmall builders brick? I've never seen a basement built like that before? or is it just decor? Interesting, all iv'e ever seen is the large builders block that are about 16" by 8" and about 8" deep, or the Poured walls.. Must be a different climate than the great north where I'm at.
Good luck on the projects... Looks like you'll have your hands full.

Signguy-

It's kinda big. It's definitely the biggest project that I've ever tackled before. So far it's been challenging at times but also really fun. A perfect justification to get new tools!  :D

Actually they're standard 8' thick poured walls. What they did is reverse the forms so that instead of having the brick pattern on the outside, it's on the inside. It's done purely for cosmetic reasons.

Personally if I had of been the original owner when they built I would have preferred to have smooth walls on both side of the pour.

Ok, now I get it... well and now you covering it up anyway so no bid deal I guess!... I redid a few basements and yes, new tools are a necessity for those projects!!! :;):  Will this be a gameroom, family room or what? Can't wait to see it, is it a walkout?? My next house MUST have a walkout!!!

Brian... looks like a good project you got there... I did mine a few years ago, and went with the steel studs.... After using them, I find it very hard to go back to using wood... They were all straight, lightweight and didn't have to drill any holes for electrical wires... The only drawback is that if you want to hang something, they are not real good for that... The other thing I did is put 1/2" sheets of insulation board onto the walls, and duct tape the seams... it made a huge difference in the temperature and the humidity... I also insulated the ceiling for sound reasons....

The plan that I drew up for the basement includes a gameroom, living room, 4th bedroom, exercise room and a home theater. Yes, it has a walkout which has proved indespensible in the movement of large items in and out.

I went with wood studs because it's what I felt comfortable with an had easily available in our local area. I plan on insulating with regular R-19 unbatted insulation. I'm pretty sure I'll be insulating the ceiling as well to cut down on noise.

What did you guys use for a floor treatment? Did you just throw pad/underlayment down then some carpet or did you use a what I call a basement flooring system?

The original owners did a great job waterproofing. I haven't had a problem with humidity yet, but spring/summer isn't here yet. That'll be the true test!

Where abouts do you live??  I'd say if it's just humidity,, nothing a couple of dehumidifiers shouldn't be able to handle?  if it's water... thats another story and then the basement floor system sounds right... When we did ours we had some history of water problems and we sealcoated the whold floor and walls with that "DryLock" Paint... and that is suppose to help. then padded and carpeted..
GOod luck.. I wish I had room for the home theatre... that sounds awesome!!!

From a sound system / acoustic point of view, carpet just absorbs sound. I would use a hard flooring of some kind so the sounds can bounce around.

But carpet is alot easier on the feet.  If you are going to have people standing up (probably in socks) playing games (arcade, pool, ping-pong, etc.) you want carpet.  We put down a cheaper, dark colored carpet in the gameroompart of our basement.

Seal the floor with a good paint.. We put down the best padding we could and then just a commercial grade carpet. Ours was meant more for a kids playroom, so we went with something that hides everything..

Glad I dropped in, I see everyone else is busy too.
Found a few machines I need to go look at, but dont have the room, so may just pass.
Relocated my mom to a new house that kept me bust for the last 5 weeks.

Family in and out. Teenagers driving me nuts and hubby finally went back to work after winter break.
