Title: is something missing?
Post by: russelltatedotcom on March 01, 2007, 05:24:09 am
Hi I just bought a 60's VMC  machine thaqt I am yet to take delivery of. I notice from the pics I have (lower one)  there are a couple of curious rust spots?
Also on similar machines I have found (top pic) I notice a copper tube in roughly the same area where the rust spots are.
Do you think something is missing on my machine or is just a variation that did not have the copper device?

Thanks for any help?

Russell

PS>Without sounding paranoid is the putty material around the wires by the lower doors meant to be like that! or is a quick fix somebody has made

Russell,

Don't be worried! In the picture that you included of your machine the "Copper Tube" (expansion chamber) is located underneath the Bottle Stack (part that holds bottles) on the left-hand side of your Evaporator Coil (silver radiator-looking thing).

The rust spots are where the Evaporator Coil is fastened to the galvanized liner with #8-24 sheet metal screws. The screws they used back the werne't as rust resistant as some of the zinc plated fasteners and definitely not as good as stainless steel.

The putty material is simply an insulating putty used to prevent any warm air from getting into the cold refrigeration compartment. It's more or less like a plumbers putty. Automotive stores also sell this putty for filling holes through the firewall and other penetrations.

One other thing I noticed. There is a tray with a perforated (slotted) peice of flimsy metal sitting on top of your Evaporator Coil directly behind the peice of sheet metal with the holes cut in it. This is you Drip Tray. It's meant to be placed next to the compressor and catches the condensate that drains from the refrigeration compartment. The slotted peice of metal hold fiberglass wicks that are meant to soak up the water and "wick it off" into the air via evaporation. When you look inside the compressor compartment, you should see a metal or clear plastic tube extending from above. This is your condensation tube.

Hope this helps! :)

Thaks for the Welcome Terry, much appreciated.

I just reread your post Brian and missed the section on wicks!
Can you tell me what those wicks look like and where I might be able to buy some from?

Cheers
RT

They are fiberglass sheets (aka Soakers) and are available from Fun-Tronics (301) 371-5246 for sure.
Not sure if they can be obtained from anyplace else.
