Title: Paint discoloration under decal?
Post by: SIGNGUY on February 12, 2007, 02:59:43 pm
I have a Vendo 56 RT that I purchased a while ago and it was restored by a previous owner, not bad restoration so I don't have to do too much to it. However the vinyl decals they applied to the sides "Have  a Coke" where mounted too high and I wanted to remove them and get new ones to mount in the correct spot. I removed one letter this weekend and there is a yellowing effect to the white paint where the letter was? I removed all the sticky substance from the sticker with remover, but the discoloration is in the paint? DO you think this could be buffed out or cleaned with something else? really don't want to have to repaint the machine since it doesn't need it? Any help. PIcture below shows the discoloration, it's worse in person, flash washed it out a bit. Thanks

Try rubbing compound first.  Color sanding with 1000 grit sandpaper will  certainly work if you have a good quality paint on there.

As Glen stated, depending on the quality of the top coat paint, you could wet sand, rubbing compound it out or use polishing compound to see if the yellow comes out. I would start wi the least abrasive, polishing compound by hand as it's less abrasive than the other methods. If this doesn't work, carefully try rubbing compound by hand... Lastly, wetsanding should definately do the job provided there's enough paint to work with... If you go this route, use a flexible rubber pad so you keep even pressure while sanding.

I tried rubbing compound by hand, no go.... I've never wet sanded before and don't want to make a huge mess? is there one more step to try before I try the wetsanding?? will that take the gloss off as well as I"m sure it's been clear coated?
Thanks

Yes, color sanding will remove the gloss and a high speed
polisher is recommended to retain the shine.
You might want to call a mobile detail service to come over
and do the whole job for you.
