Title: Do your own chrome?
Post by: bubba on February 01, 2007, 08:01:03 am
I saw this ad for a company who make a do it yourself chrome kit... Its no the cheapest to give it a try, but has anyone heard of this company or their products?? Its in the back of the magazine where all the other gimmick ads like hovercrafts and build your own stun guns, etc....

The company's website is.... http://www.alsacorp.com/ and the stuff I am talking about is called true chrome kit.

Never heard of it or tried it.
Looks to be a basecoat / enamel paint in a can with a can of clearcoat.

You looked him up - huh?
He's the guy that had the Lyon's machine or maybe he was the bogus seller - I can't remember.

The new car busness has been using portable chrome and
gold plating systems for several years now. They plate hood ornaments, door handles etc. in place by hooking a machine that looks similar to a battery charger to the part. The product is
applied electromagneticly and is quite expensive per ounce.
Unless I missed something..........this company is selling $5.00
aerosol cans of "mexican chrome" for $40.00 each !   :help:

Sure looked cool ,but again I'm a novice at the painting thing, and I'm always looking for the "Simple Way". so maybe it's not a good thing??? :(

I have thought about buying the electro chrome kits a few times. They do produce great finishes and are alot cheeper than commercial chroming. You can even chrome plastic parts with it. But here is the catch. The reason that chroming parts is so expensive is chroming is just like painting. The final product is only as good as the prep work. There is alot of prep that goes into chrome plating. Especially if there is any pitting. SO if you are planning on chroming new emblems on cars where they are new and shiny the product will look great, If you are plating a pitted coin entry bezel the outcome will just be a shinier pitted bezel.

Chrome/Gold platingI forgot to say I had thought of buying the kit when I lived in Daytona. If you are plating new stuff that is smooth the electro plate kits work great. I was going to do it for daytona Bike week. There were always several vendors doing that there. They were always packed. It works good for small parts. So if any of you buy one of the electro plating kits someone could make a killing going to car shows and cruise ins on the weekends chroming emblems and small pieces. You would have people lined up to have parts chromes and you can do gold too. the best thing is you can do it on the car and there is no prep work. This is the same process that dealerships use to add gold packages to their cars.

Here is one system on ebay 110085950921

Just the other day my daughter brought their catalog home from her autobody class. A rep did a demo with the products both out of the can and out of a gun. She said the stuff was pretty cool and I think she said on one product you powder coat black, spray the chrome and then powder coat clear.
She is doing a pedal car for the Seattle Roadster Show for the school, and they are going to use the Chrome spray on the grille and bumper parts. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Pat my Mom has a fully restored mustang pedal car she might want to sell if you are interested. It was NOS but UPS damaged it in shipping so we had it fully restored. We even used the origional correct color red with the correct laquor.

By the way,
There is nothing like real chrome or freshly polished aluminum!
This product might be innovative and cool to use on small projects. But I wouldn't use it to replace real chrome plating.
my 2 cents

Roger, see if you can get them to spray a small
extra part for us.  Then when she brings it home and it's cured, we can give it a "durability test".

I had some hinges powder coated chrome and they looked great. But it still doesn't look as good as chrome.
