Title: Crank handle Problem Post by: TheGarbageHunter on January 29, 2007, 11:43:21 am The crank handle on my vendo 81 coin mech is very tight. When I place a dime in the mech and crank it down it fails to comeback up on its own.
Even worst part is when I need to get into the inner coin door area it requiers a great deal of strength to get the crank handle to move and unlock. It requieres so much force I'm concerned that the mech rod will break. I had the handle chromed, could they have reassembled it wrong?? I was thinking of taking it apart and greasing it. I removed its cover but cannot figuer out how to remove its inner assembly?? Please help! Title: Crank handle Problem Post by: cormy on January 29, 2007, 12:08:49 pm Failure of the handle to return after cranking tells me its not the handle but something else along the lines of the vending mechanism that runs inside the door and or the bottle rack release mechanism. I could be wrong, its been awhile since I worked on one.
Title: Crank handle Problem Post by: davethebirdman on January 29, 2007, 12:43:28 pm You might also want to check the spring to see if that has come adrift in the coin mech. I had a similar problem with my 56 and replaced the spring.
Title: Crank handle Problem Post by: collecture on January 29, 2007, 01:50:33 pm QUOTE When I place a dime in the mech and crank it down it fails to comeback up on its own. Is this a LD mech you are talking about or a SD mech? QUOTE I had the handle chromed, could they have reassembled it wrong?? Yes - the pawl in the handle can fit in two ways, but only one way is correct. You want it to release easy if you pull back on the handle. If too much pressure is exerted downward, it should release also. The handle pawl, cam and spring should be greased. I talked to the guy at Funtronics, he said that during the chrome process the inners of the handle where degreased. Suggested I take it apart and regrease it. I plan on doing it tonight. Let you guys know what happened. Thanks for all the help! Title: Crank handle Problem Post by: collecture on January 29, 2007, 03:08:05 pm Regardless of the handle being greased or not, the handle should spring back.
Can you see on the back whether the return spring is broken or loose? Title: Crank handle Problem Post by: TheGarbageHunter on January 29, 2007, 04:42:04 pm I will check the coin mech main spring tonight.

Suggested I take it apart and regrease it Are we assuming the chrome plater broke down the handle, plated and re-assembled it? My friend sent one to the plater complete, and that's how they dipped it. It came back frozen solid and we had to use a vise and hammer to open it up Title: Crank handle Problem Post by: collecture on January 29, 2007, 09:37:08 pm QUOTE My friend sent one to the plater complete, and that's how they dipped it. I bought a mech and handle one time and the handle was that way. It was a real pain to get apart. I ruined the cover plate in the process. Title: Crank handle Problem Post by: TheGarbageHunter on January 29, 2007, 11:39:52 pm Problem solved!!
Let this be a lesson/warning to all that plan to have their press down handles chromed, take it all apart before sending it!!!! It was dry as an over cooked turkey in there!! I basically took it all apart, cleaned it up and regreased it with white grease and a shot of lithium grease. Put it back together and its now as SMOOTH AS CUTTING BUTTER! Mission Accomplished with out damage to my cherry machine. Thanks everyone for your help! Title: Crank handle Problem Post by: BrianB on January 30, 2007, 07:06:39 am Congrats on the fix! Thanks for the warning about disassembling before sending to be chromed.
I learned another lesson about chroming last year. If there is any screw, nut or various fastener that you want to keep, take it off before sending out to be chromed. I have a habit of taking something apart and then replacing the fasteners from whence they came so that I know what I need to buy and where it belongs. I found out the hard way that if you leave "semi-loose" hardware on a peice to be chromed, it will be removed and trashed. That really sucks when you haven't taken a picture or commited the peice to memory. Title: Crank handle Problem Post by: cormy on January 30, 2007, 10:00:37 am Never understood why people chrome the crank handles. I don't think they were originally, were they?
I like to keep the look original as possible. Title: Crank handle Problem Post by: TheGarbageHunter on January 30, 2007, 10:05:09 am Once you go chrome you can never go back.
Love the shine! Title: Crank handle Problem Post by: collecture on January 30, 2007, 10:14:23 am QUOTE Once you go chrome you can never go back. Your alias isn't "chromedong" is it? Title: Crank handle Problem Post by: collecture on January 30, 2007, 10:17:14 am QUOTE Never understood why people chrome the crank handles. I don't think they were originally, were they? I believe they were, but it was not the quality we know today. The split doors on the VMC27's and VMC33's were not chromed, but a flat grey. Title: Crank handle Problem Post by: MoonDawg on January 30, 2007, 11:14:14 am I think all those aluminum handles were highly polished.
A polished handle looks real close to chrome but becomes tarnished and dull within months. Title: Crank handle Problem Post by: sodaworks on January 30, 2007, 08:05:30 pm Glens right. The 27's and 33's are polished aluminum. You clean spray a clearcoat on after polishing to protect it from tarnishing.
