Title: Near my house
Post by: 90grad on December 20, 2006, 07:05:38 am
Okay, here's the story.  I was doing my daily eBay check yesterday and saw a nice, clean 39 in Owings Mills, MD, which is about 45 minutes from me.  Here's the auction link..

Vendo 39

So, in the photos you can see a few other machines (Jacobs, VMC 27 or 33, and a Vendo 23).  I email the seller and ask about those.  He tells me he's selling the stuff for his friend and gives me the guy's name and number.  I call the guy and he lives about 5 miles from me.  I am supposed to go over there tonight.

I'll give a full report (with photos if he'll let me) and see what he wants for stuff.  My guess is I won't be able to afford anything, but I can certainly check stuff out for everyone else.  Stay tuned........

Oh cr*p, I won't be able to go over tonight (the guy won't be home until late).  He said I may be able to stop by tomorrow afternoon.

Ok, I can't take any more of these cliff hangers.
Go over there anyway,  maybe the wife is mad, and will take $100 to clear out the garage.

HEY! One can hope

That's the way it always seems to go.  Leave you hanging sleepless for a night, or worse yet, find out on a Friday and for whatever reason have to wait 'till Monday.

Update...

As many have said, the thrill of the hunt is fun.  Seems like I get more thrills that way than actually getting machines.

I went to the guys house and he has:

1. The 39 which is on eBay.  The current bid, as I type this is $1000.  The machine is in VERY nice original shape and is complete.

2. A couple of Junior coolers he is restoring.

3. A Victor cooler (not the grill model) he is restoring for some one.

4. A VMC 33.  This is in nice shape, but is missing the slug rejector, crank handle, coin box, and cap catcher.

5. A very nice, complete Vendo 23 Deluxe.

6. A complete Jacobs 26.

7. What appeared to be a Cavalier Dry cooler.

So, I meet the guy and he says he has received a bunch of calls and the Vendo 23 has been sold.  He sold it for $1500!  Then, a guy from Virginia has said he will buy the rest of them.  But, he said the guy hasn't sent any money or made a specific time to see the stuff.  I had the subtle feelings of a bidding war.

He wants $1500 for each machine.  That's fair for the Jacobs, but I think he's nuts about the rest.  But, he got some one (he claims) to buy the 23 for that.  I didn't ask, but was wondering why the 23 was still there if it had been sold ???

I did tell him I'd post the pictures of the 26 to you guys and will provide his cell # (he doesn't do computers) if anyone is interested.

So, once again, I come home empty.  But, I had never seen a Jacobs or VMC 33 in person, so that was nice.

Here's two bonus pictures.  Today, I had the pleasure of attending my Dad's retirement luncheon in my hometown of Frederick, MD.  It's was really a nice moment for me and made not getting the machines seem pointless.

Anyway, there is a Coca Cola bottling plant in Frederick and here are two photos.  The bottle is about 36 feet tall.  As coincidentally, I sat next to a guy at my Dad's luncheon who painted it at one time!  He said it was made of hard plastic.

When I first was talking to the guy, he said, "Are you just here to look or are you interesting in buying something?"  That raised my suspicions.  He said he had gotten a lot of calls (through the guy selling the 39 for him) from people who saw the machines in the background of the auction pictures.

He seemed a little hesitant about me at first.  Then, he found out I actually knew some stuff and then started asking me questions about things.  The 23 was buried under some stuff and it didn't look like it had moved.  But, he claims it was sold for $1500.  His stuff has not been on eBay (he doesn't do computers and I always look for auctions close to me).  Then, he says some guy in VA wants them all.  Hmm...

This may all be true, and, if so, that's great for him.  I was just feeling like he was trying to entice me to "jump on the deal before some one else does".  I didn't want to show how much I knew at first, but when he did that, I pulled out the stops.  After that, he figured he wasn't dealing with a complete idiot (maybe a partial one).  At any rate, we did have a nice conversation and at the end he still wants $1500 for the Jacobs.  I can't afford that.

Why can't I find this type of collectoin with a disgruntled wife who wants the junk out of her basement for next to nothing? :darn:
