Title: A1 telephone....
Post by: Eric on December 12, 2006, 11:04:37 pm
These pop up every once in a while....
people don't know the difference between this phone
(A1 model, first desk phone - $1000) and a 102 model (same round base - $200)
it's the neck with the text so in your travels watch for it.

last picture (red background) is the 102 Western Electric model... still a cool phone...

So if there is wording on the neck of it, then it is worth the most?

Yeah if the copyrights and patient numbers are around the neck And the neck and base are 2 pieces...it's  the A1 I'll get detailed photos and post... I've yet to come across one but it seems all the collectors I know that have one stumble on them in Antique stores and auctions where  no one really knows what they have... and these always sell around a grand or more if it has the original dial.
A1 necks screw into the base (looks like a candle stick cut down) where the 102 model the neck and base is all one piece.

Wow! Thanks for the short tutorial Eric. I'll definitely have to keep a look out for the A1.

I always thought it would be neat to have one of these that actually worked. Is it as simple as just plugging into the phone jack? Assuming the phone is in operating order.

Cormy.. these smaller type (round and oval base) phones don't have a ringer in them so they won't ring... they were connected to a bell box... but yes you can still rewire these as is and use them as extention phones.

BrianB... Just wanted you all to know what might be sitting on a shelf that's
worth some pretty good $$. that you could pick up and keep or sell to help
buy that next soda machine....
I'll try and get better pics for you all to see the differnce... I'll take a pic of my 102 base so you know what to look for... Hey it all helps to have
something to wheel and deal... unless your like Joey and people just bring you stuff!  :D

Never thought about an old phone before, now you gave me one more thing to crowd my mind with.

Seems like the seller has not taken the advice offered to him by one of the people posing a question. I should commend that person for being so honest with the seller but if you were one of those waiting to snipe at the end thinking that you were going to get a bargain you'd be cursing him.
