Title: I'm off again!
Post by: dr galaga on August 01, 2006, 08:09:47 pm
I hit the road in the morning to get more drinks for my machines (and for some of my friends too).
I thought that some of you may like this picture of the back of my truck (I also have a few more cases in the trailer).

I too have made several Treks to Winona, and visited with Clint, and Leroy.. Nicest guys around.. Great small town and They new my Grandfather who owned a bottling Blant in Central Wisconsin.. so we had some stories to tell. First time down there about 6 years ago, they showed me around the whole plant. They had some old machines still in use in the the plant, and some great memorabilia from the 50's still on the walls.. I am going back this fall as well to get more bottles.

I hadn't checked your site in awhile.  I see you made some additions to the bottled soda site.

Yea Creighton, I think I need a delivery truck!  I wasn't able fit as many cases as I would like to in my trailer.  I measured for 7 ounce bottles at Seymour but I picked up 10 ounce bottles.  I wanted to put a second layer of bottles, but could only fit a few cases since the lid was a few inches to short (but is higher in the middle).  I had to go up another layer in the back of my truck, which I didn't want to do.
Thanks Dan, my bottle site is up to 77 bottlers.  I still have to add a few more brewers in WI and MI who are making root beer to the list.  If anyone knows of any more, please let me know.
When I go to Winona I'm going to ask them to see their bottling area.
I sure hope that these old plants stay around for some time to come.  For some time small brewers closed up because they could not compete with the big boys.  Now microbrewery's are becoming popular and are poping up all over the place.  Could "gourmet" soda be next for an upswing? ???

Went to the Winona plant today.  Here are a few pics of what you see when you walk in the door:

I got a quick tour of the place after I loaded my bottles up.  I asked about taking pictures of the bottling equipment and they said not this time due to the repairing of some of their equipment.  I didn't get to see they whole plant, so I didn't see any of the machines that you saw Signguy :( , but it was still pretty neat. :)

I hope to get back down there in the next month or so...I do trades with them as i have about 150 cases of empty 6.5 oz Green hobbleskirt bottles left... these are the old original thick green glass bottles... clint fills those for me, but  Ihave to bring and extra case for every 5 I bring as alot gets broken in the washing process as they are quite old.. Nothing better than a cold WInona Coke in a ice cold 6.5 oz Bottle!

You can also trade in the bottles at the Red Wing plant up the river (if for some reason you don't want to drive all the way down some time).  They get their stuff from Winona.
