Title: We all should have pitched in
Post by: jasmine64 on June 22, 2006, 04:32:23 pm
Well I was watching the Memphis news at 4 when they told of the auction at the amusement park Libertyland, anyway the worlds oldest: wooden roller coaster Zippin Pippin went for 2500.00!

I have ridden this coaster many times in the late 70's. Was one of Elvis' favorite.

The last time I rode it, Elvis had rented out the park for the night and we had to leave the park early so he and his friends could have the park all to themselves.

Didnt matter then , but sure wish we could have hung around and atleast got a glimpse of him. Dad was impatient and hearded us to the car so we could make it to the house for dinner then to the movies.

Wow, looks like they had a ton of cool stuff there!
I think the train would have looked cool going around my property.  There's even some signals for the driveway! :p

It's sad to see it go, but it's been sitting unused for a year or so.

They closed the gates and locked up everything.

The train was cool, slow but thats ok, I would have love to have the caboose,
my hubby would have died if I brought something like that home. The old model cars
were one of the first things you say coming into the park.

The icecream bike would have been great to redo in Coca cola red.

Oh well 100 miles and no way to get it all home.

I was hoping Dollywood would have purchased the coaster.

The carousel wasnt in the pics so I really dont know what will come of it.

Do you know who purchased the coaster?  Another park I assume.

My wife wanted to get a caboose to set up as a pool house in the back yard - Ha! Those things are a lot bigger in person - I think I would have paid to have it get here and then she would have said I'm tired of it in a couple of years.

I had to take my grandparents to the airport at 7:30am and saw the auction signs.  I was planning on attending to see what stuff went for, but forgot and made other plans.
It is probably a good thing I did not attend.  I know I would have come home something I really didn't need.
My wife doesn't like my habits on collecting very much, but she told me if she knew the Pippin was only going to go for 2500.00 I could have bought it.

Great stuff! Hope the coaster ends up at a good home. Looks like the one that is at the Santa Cruz boardwalk. Fun!!

Dan,
From what the news said  some guy purchased it only for the cars.
He wants them to go in his museum in Nashville, Tn.
