Title: Doing my part!
Post by: collecture on April 28, 2006, 09:48:00 pm
My 4 year-old is in a local Montessori school here. I took my Standard Change Maker to the kindergarten teacher there today filled with nickels and dimes along with two rolls of quarters. When I picked my son up, she said it was a hit - by the end of the day, everybody knew that two dimes and a nickel equals a quarter. She asked if I could leave it there and, of course, I told her she could use it as long as she wants. It is such a thrill seeing little guys and gals learn - I just wanted to share it with you guys.

Good work. You have inspired me to bring my coin-op cigarette machine to my kindergartener's class. :D
Just kidding. :p

But seriously, that's a cool idea using your change machine.

My four year-old loves to put nickels in my machines and crank the handle down even though nothing comes out (I had the coin reject rigged). Once I got this change machine and had it sitting on the counter, he went crazy over it because different coins came out. A while back (long before I got the changer), I was talking to the kindergarten teacher at an open house and she told me that one of their many objectives is to get the kids to recognize money. Well, the two just sort of meshed together.

The Montessori School is a great school - my son has been reading simple books to me for about 6 months now and I am just happy to give something back to them. It's funny - he reads all the signs as we go down the road now and the mispronunciations are pretty funny (It's hard not laugh at him).

Kids are a blast!!!

My wife teaches Montessori.  If done right it can be great.
My 5 year old also loves putting money into and getting change out of the Coke machine.  He likes toy cash registers too.  We got him a really cool ATM machine (no, not a REAL one, a TOY) and he likes it.  You program your 4 digit pin # and that is the only way to put $ in or take it out. It keeps track of how much you have in it too.
