Title: Site speed Post by: bubba on April 05, 2006, 07:00:25 pm Has the site been running slow the last few days or is it me? I feel like I am on dialup...
Title: Site speed Post by: BryanH on April 05, 2006, 07:08:06 pm Ken intermittently over the last two weeks I've found it to be on the slow side also.
Title: Site speed Post by: vend_dr on April 05, 2006, 07:20:55 pm Yes I believe the site has been running slow lately too!
Title: Site speed Post by: dr galaga on April 05, 2006, 07:45:59 pm I've noticed that too. It seems to be slow "processing". When I click on something, it takes a bit until the next page appears, but one the page starts loading it is okay.
Title: Site speed Post by: Creighton on April 05, 2006, 07:57:24 pm Another site I visit is the same way. Suspect it is all the cr*p sent out by the spammers. Always a good idea to clear offline content files and run spyware/virus programs. Spyware garbage will slow a computer to a crawl.
Creighton Title: Site speed Post by: Jim on April 05, 2006, 10:01:57 pm I noticed it more in the Vending Shop than anywhere else...
I'm look into something for optimizing PHP that may help there but the Discussion Areas have been written in Perl so I'll take a look at some Database optimization... We're approaching 30,000 records/posts but I don't think this is extremely large and shouldn't affect performance... Title: Site speed Post by: collecture on April 06, 2006, 01:01:17 am I have noticed it mainly when I click on the 'Discussion Areas" button on the main page. I sometimes have to click it again.

I visit about 10 different forums daily, with some hosted on home pc's, and the majority are all fairly fast. Over the years, I've learned how to virtually eliminate spam and keep my pc's running fairly clean. The combination of AV, spyware, spam blocking and dilligence I have setup seems to be working. Jim... I would definately look into the database optimization. I would suspect that 30k posts will need some kind of maintenance. I believe that all these posts get indexed each time someone clicks on a forum. Title: Site speed Post by: sodaworks on April 07, 2006, 12:06:35 am WOW!! Really slow tonight. I have been away working our plant shutdown outage ( 16 hour days) and thought I would catch up on things. Not enough time!!
Title: Site speed Post by: on April 26, 2006, 10:01:08 am Jim, have you had a chance to look into the slow processing of the discussion forums here, yet?
I have a high-speed cable internet connection and I visit tons of sites everyday and they are all fast, except for the forums here at SMC. This site is WAY, WAY, WAY slow. It is painful. Please see if there is a way to correct this. Like I said, everywhere else I visit on the web is just fine, but not here. Thanks SO much. I would appreciate it. ~'kito Title: Site speed Post by: davethebirdman on April 26, 2006, 03:20:34 pm Okay
so now I'm wondering what other sites people out there visit. Am I missing out on something. Title: Site speed Post by: dr galaga on April 26, 2006, 04:40:27 pm Jim- I notice that it is slowest in the General Discussion area.
Dave- I visit KLOV (Killer List of Video Games), AtariAge, BevNet and Salute to Soda forums (I also visit some for work like Title: Site speed Post by: collecture on April 28, 2006, 10:27:39 pm Appears to be MUCH better!!
Title: Site speed Post by: bubba on April 29, 2006, 05:33:19 am Yeah... Its like a different place this morning...
Title: Site speed Post by: dr galaga on April 29, 2006, 07:35:46 am Yep, faster for me this morning too!
Title: Site speed Post by: Jim on April 29, 2006, 03:34:15 pm I'm still working on site speed issues...
The company I rent this server from just sent me a message stating one of my databases is a resource hog and needs top be corrected... I'm still attempting to research and fiddle with MySQL optimization/repair tools... I think the site speed is varied and I cannot narrow down a time frame when it's slow because it varies so much... I'll keep working on it... Title: Site speed Post by: dr galaga on April 29, 2006, 04:04:42 pm
Well, it seem to be slowing down for me now (not as slow as it has been though). Title: Site speed Post by: on April 29, 2006, 10:35:03 pm Still seems VERY slow to me, and it is in all forums, nout just General Discussion.
Thanks for continuing to look into it Jim. Title: Site speed Post by: bubba on April 29, 2006, 11:36:13 pm
Jim.. I visit this site on average ---- between 6:30am- 10:30 pm EST, and the site has been incredibly slow for a few weeks now. I wonder if the pictures that are uploaded to this server maybe doing it? A few other sites I belong to do not allow picture uploads because it clogs the servers some how. I don't know anything about databases or this BB software, but could that have something to do with it? Title: Site speed Post by: on April 30, 2006, 02:33:45 pm But how could we survive here without photos?!?
As you know, we LIVE for peoples photos of their machines and finds. Title: Site speed Post by: dr galaga on April 30, 2006, 04:28:12 pm
IF it ever came down to it, people would just have to find some place to put their pictures (most ISP's provide space for their customers). It would be less convenient, but the board would go on.... Plus who knows if that is the problem, it was just one idea that bubba threw out. Title: Site speed Post by: Creighton on April 30, 2006, 07:32:57 pm Jim,
Whatever you just did seems to have worked. Fastest it has been in a long time and that is on the garage puter. Thanks!! Creighton Title: Site speed Post by: bubba on April 30, 2006, 07:59:14 pm Exactly... One of the other sites I'm on doesn't host the pics, but you can link to them. Most of the pictures I posted in the beginning were loaded to my companies site, and I just linked to them. I've been a bit lazy lately and have uploaded them directly here, but I am going to get myself out of that habbit.
Title: Site speed Post by: Jim on April 30, 2006, 08:34:31 pm bubba,
Thanks for your efforts in conserving space here at SMC! I "think" the problem lies with optimizing tables within MySQL... I ran into a few errors on this and I'm still attempting to see where I can reduce lag time... I'm actually beginning to think there may be other hosts on the same server that can be causing an issue as well... I'll keep everyone posted as things develop... Title: Site speed Post by: BryanH on May 15, 2006, 10:35:24 pm Been away for a week or so... not sure what you did but the response is back to the "good old days", just below lightening speed. Thanks Jim!
Title: Site speed Post by: dr galaga on May 16, 2006, 05:26:45 pm Yea, right now everything is great.
Title: Site speed Post by: on May 18, 2006, 10:12:54 pm WOW, something finally really changed, because like you said, it feels like the old days! MUCH faster, I will now visit the site even more now that it doesn't take forever for pages to open. THANKS SOOOOO MUCH JIM!!!
What was the issue? What did you do to fix it? ~Markito Title: Site speed Post by: Marvin on May 18, 2006, 11:04:30 pm I have noticed it has been super fast the last few days myself. Whatever changed, keep it that way.
Marvin Title: Site speed Post by: sodaworks on May 27, 2006, 07:55:45 pm I've been out of town a few days. My son is visiting from Alaska and my Daughter just got married at the coast on Wednes., The site speed is fast once again. Thanks Jim!!
