Hi All,
Just a thought...off the soda topic here.
Most everyone has been a member of SMC for some time. Maybe some of you have met face to face - maybe not! In an effort to get to know one another better and might make a good slam / fan topic. What kind of music does everyone like or dislike. When the birthday topic came up a little while back, I check out everyones age and, other than Moondawg [old man j/k
] everyone seems to be in their 40's. Long before I dove head first into collecting soda stuff, I collected music. My teenage years being in the 70's, I mainly bought what I like (R&R), but I as time went by I also ventured out in a little R&B, country, disco and grunge in the early 90's. Never really got into rap although I do own a Monster Rap CD with "Walk This Way" and whatever that Vanilla Ice song was among others. I still have a lot of the Westwood One and King Biscuit Flower Hour recordings (not a tape, but the actual vinyl that was distributed to the radio stations). If anyone has a particular favorite band, I have transferred a lot of the concerts to CD and would be happy to burn you one if you want. Real quality sound! Anyway, what makes you boogie woogie?

I'm 40... Loved Oak Ridge Boys & Statler Brothers
also Charlie Daniels, Eagles and CCR in High School.
Then went to college and sang in a Southern Gospel Quartet
this is now my favorite type music. I do listen to
Harry Connick Jr. and Michael Buble (wife Loves them)...
Like Big Band, Brian Setzer, 50s Rock and Roll.
Basicly anything from or that sounds like they're from
the 40s to mid 60s.

Well, I am the rebel I guess. I had three older brothers who were into the 60's R&R, so I kind of inherited their taste. I love Stray Cats and Brian Setzer also and have seen him a few times - great show! I have a couple of concerts of his if you guys are interested. One is of his band in Vegas, another is a Stray Cats concert from the late 70's or early 80's and I also have a fun little Sun Records thing with Brian Setzer, Ricky Scaggs, Elvis Costello and Marty Stuart where they do a bunch of old Sun Records tunes. PM me with your address and I'll mail you a CD if you are interested.

Once again I am in between music genre's.. In the 70's I was listening to early rock of the '50's, and proudly admit I was the only suburban kid in the country without a copy of "Frampton comes alive"
I still have 45's of classic songs of the 60's and 70's for the day I get a jukebox, but for now I listen to the International Silver String Submarine Band :P

Back in school, almost 20 yrs ago (wow, I sound old) I was nicknamed Metalhead. Big Metallica, Anthrax, AC/DC, Ozzy, etc.... I don't like any of the 90's or newer metal, grunge, whatever its called. I have DTV Satellite, and use their music stations for my music at home...Their heavy metal station I didn't like, so I started listening to 60's-70's rock. A few months ago, they changed to XM satellite radio for their music stations. While relearning the stations, I started listening to the old heavy metal again...
In the car, I usually listen to talk radio, news type of show... The hosts are great, and it gives me a good idea of just how bad and corrupt my wonderful State of NJ really is...

I like most music from the 50's on up. Right now I am listening to Club977 (80's), in the car I usually listen to local station that plays the the "80's, 90's and today" (it's satellite programing most of the day, but a local DJ (former student) in the morning). I also listen to the local country station.
After over 20 years, this is my first year not working in radio (feels weird just listening). The only types of music I do not like are "death metal" and classical. I'm also not a big fan of current CHR (Top 40) music. At least back in our day songs would just hint at things - Afternoon Delight, Little Red Corvette, Funky Cold Medina, etc. The songs nowadays just slap you in the face and give you graphic details of what they did in the bedroom or kitchen. Not quite sure if it is the old fart or the radio station manager (community standards anyone?) in me.
This should spark another topic of "What is in your jukebox?".

You are so right Dr Galaga. I remember Rich Girl by Hall and Oates and when they said bitch it was so scandalous! On Money by Pink Floyd where they said bull s*it they would fade out the s*it. On brown eyed girl (Van Morrison) they would substitute "makin love in the green grass" outside the stadium with you , my brown eyed girl with laughin and runnin hey hey with you , my brown eyed girl.
I am stuck in the 70's and early 80's, with some 60's thrown in. Beatles, Stones, Moody Blues, ELO, Yes, Led Zepp, the Who, Badfinger, Raspberries, with a lot of more obscure "Power Pop" type bands. when I pull out the vinyl, the kids act like it is a model T ford!

I can handle anything but Country (the "my wife left me & horse died" kind), Celion Dion (and equivalents) and RAP. Have bits and pieces for most other kinds of music in between. Really like the 50's and 60's stuff. Generally, want something that has a real beat... upbeat and moving. Over the last several years I've been disturbed to learn that the music I listened to in high school / university (Zeppelin, Boston, Foreigner, Cheap Trick, Eagles, Styx, etc, etc) is now considered "Classic Rock" (a nasty euphanism for old 
). Anyway lately I've found myself listening to the contemporary Christian rock stations... Good message and none of that slap you in the face stuff Dr G mentions. Saves lots of time explaining songs to the kids.
Oh yeah - all time favorite band is still RUSH.

I also can't take the Top 40 stuff of today. Dancing was never my strongest suit anyway. My wife loves all that Hollyweird crap and I can't pass through the room without hearing some sort Britney or Kevin scoop - not that she likes the music - just the scoop. I am definately a Blues Rock guy. I love Stevie Ray Vaughan and have quite an extensive collection of his stuff. I grew up in Texas and used to watch him on a small bar stage - sometimes being one of about six or seven people in the bar. I really feel that there is a music for every mood and I have a pretty diverse collection. In college, if I needed to study - I would put on Classical. If I am camping, I like country. Nice dinner - Jazz. I normally listen to XM Top Tracks or a local station here (103.1) which is out of Florence, AZ. Great station - no commercials - and some off the wall deep tracks like Trapeze or Robin Trower.

I listen mostly to contemporary Christian when I listen. Bought the wife an XM for Christmas and I sometimes log on and listen to other stuff. I guess I am a big fan of old country (70's era mostly) as I remember that playing in my folks store when I was growing up. I like the 80's as it reminds me of high school. I played bluegrass (remember the banjo jokes a few weeks ago?) for many years also.
I don't care for any metal either but I do listen to some classical....When I was in college in KY, the Lexington Philharmonic would have their stuffed shirt performance on Saturdays...but on Fridays they would have an "unplugged and untied" casual concert. They would do the same music but the conductor would spend some time telling about each piece (history and meaning) and note things to listen for. In addition they would offer at least one selection of a non classical song...arranged in classical fashion (i.e. Pink Floyd, Led Zep etc) plus it was free to students. So I really came to enjoy the music once I could appreciate it and what it was about. It was also a good cheap date. One night they did an entire show on music from cartoons.
To tie this rambling together...I went last week to see Glen Campbell with the Charlotte Symphony and it was really good.

Yes, he did to play Amazing Grace. I had hoped he would also play Bonapartes Retreat since he had them out. Clip of Bonapartes retreat Amazon page, first song on Disc 2, listed down the page. (Tried to link directly to the file but can not get it to work)
I had forgotten what a talented guitar player he was. My wife who is 30 had no idea who Glen Campbell was...and noted she was the youngest person there. I have to admit there were a lot of Buicks in the parking lot. It was pretty funny when he played Rhinstone Cowboy...Gina said I think I like that song...she had never heard it before.

My wife and I have gone to a local Christmas Charity event here in Phoenix for the last few years. It is variety type show put on by Alice Cooper (Phoenix resident) and is called Alice Cooper's Cristmas Pudding. Every year he has quite a few musicians from around the world. Last year he had The Tubes "White Punks On Dope", a Chicago (CTA) member, Styx, Don Felder (Eagles). In 2004, he had Ted Nugent, D*mn Yankees, Cheap Trick and Glen Campbell, who was also there in 2002 when his son's band also played. Great fun show!

I'm another one that is slightly younger at 28. I can thank my Dad though for my taste in music.
I love the Beatles, Moody Blues, Yes, and CCR just to name a few. Current groups that I like would be Dave Mattews Band, Collective Soul, and Gorillaz.
The only type I won't listen too is classical and there is only so much country music I can stand.

I'm a Moody Blues fan big time. I listen to all types of music but mostly 70s rock. I do like some of the new artists and XM radio really has exposed me to a lot of music that is new and that I have forgot about. Buying a lot of CDs these days!

I really don't like most 70's music or whiney country. Modern/Rockin' Country is ok to switch to from time to time and through my wife I don't mind Alabama. I like a lot of 80's pop/pop rock (almost anything from Pet Shop Boys to Prince, Aerosmith, Def Lep., Bon Jovi, Dead or Alive, INXS and a lot of one hit wonders, I could go on for quite a while naming songs). My friends from work think I am a walking 80's jukebox encyclopedia. New stuff I like can range from Nine Inch Nails to new Madonna, Blink 182, The Ataris, Jet, Creed, Puddle of Mudd, The Killers...

One hit wonders are great! I love stumping friends on the artist when it plays. My favorite stumper is Norman Greenbaum. Did you ever watch that VH1 "One Hit Wonders" show?
Jet is (maybe was) a great band-the wife and I saw them in a small place a couple of years ago. Wonder though if they are going to go the way of so many rock bands - one good album and crash...burn out...overdose...disband...??? Still like the first album though - listened to it the other day. Videos ruin a lot of bands for me - if I just heard the music and didn't SEE the band I might like them, but seeing them sometimes makes me dislike them.

At 44 there is not much I don't like. Have worn out several copies of Stones, Buffet, Yes, Gratefull Dead vinyl, 8-tracks, cassetes... Ritchie Blackmore and Stevie Ray Vaughn are the best leads I've ever seen. On a good day Keith Richards is amazing. Lately back into the Delta Blues stuff. Kinda where all the R@R/RB started. Saw "Honeyboy Edwards" the other day, 90 years old and still played a killer slide g-tar. In my younger days caught all the live shows. Journey/Rush/ZZ/Ratt etc.. For like $7 bucks a tic. Too expensive now, Buffet at Shoreline is $45 for lawn next month. Stones were $95 (min)first tour I've missed since 1978 (Some Girls). Crazy!!

I always believe it's difficult to change a person's first impression when they meet someone new...
With that said, I might not fit in here and therefore should refrain from listing my musical tastes as I may never get the chance to redeem my first impression to many of you...
But, in the spirit of things...
I can say I was raised on late 70's music, Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath Areosmith and others; you know the list...
Somewhere around 1980 I started listening to Iron Maiden, Accept, Motley Crue, Pantera, Great White, Judas Priest, Metallica and many others that aren't on any big labels...
Today, I still listen to these bands and many of the new metal bands; HOWEVER, I have broadened my musical tastes over the last decade with the exception of rap and country...
With that said, I might not fit in here and therefore should refrain from listing my musical tastes as I may never get the chance to redeem my first impression to many of you...
But, in the spirit of things...

I see a theme developing here...the dislike of country.
I had buddy who deployed to New Orleans during Katrina, he said that he went into a Wal Mart that had been looted, the only thing left in the store were the country music CDs.

It amazes me that AC/DC, Van Halen, Molley Hatchett and all my old favorites are considered "classic" rock. My kids are enjoying the same stuff that I "rocked out" to in the 70's. I wonder in 25 years if people will even remember Britney S., Jessica S., justin T. and all the overrated "pop" stars of today. probably not!!!

As the saying goes - "Rock and Roll will never die". In an earlier post, I did say I got into country for a while - I did not dig deep into it as it just didn't do it for me. I liked Hank Jr. and Sr., Jerry Jeff Walker, Willie Nelson and Dwight Yoakam alright, but don't own anybody else. I will say this, Hank Jr. is really quite talented. I saw a concert of his once and he jumped around that stage playing every instrument from drums to keyboards, etc. I grew up in Texas and had exposure to a lot of these guys through friends and such. Todays Country music I don't care for. I am with Jim though, I still pretty much listen to the genre of music I loved way back when and have added a few new ones - Pearl Jam, Jet, a little White Stripes. It is healthy to broaden your taste a little.

Jim, My brothers listened to lot of those bands too. I remember them playing some of the early Journey they rocked then. Greg Rollie ruled, I'll always think of him as the singer of "Black Magic Woman" with Santana. Even though his Journey years were great, he still rocks.
So, I owned some Zepplin, Iron Maiden over the years, I still have an Ozzie lp somewhere. Saw Ted Nugent in New Orleans he was great.
Only country I listen to is Tim Mcgraw, thanks to my daughter. She loves him. That should be all of my music interest.

I saw Buck Owen's not to log ago in Bakersfield, Ca. He owns the Crystal Palace in Bakersfield. This is where Garth Brooks proposed to Triesha Yearwood. Buck always has country music stars hanging around. Dwight yocum hangs out here all the time. Did you know that Buck Owens and his family walked all the way to Bakersfield from Texas during the early dust bowl days. Another local boy done good was Merle Haggard, I have quite a few of his songs in one of my Jukeboxes. My Dad used to watch him play at the "Blackboard" before he recorded any music. I also like the old Johnie Cash music. He wrote several of his early songs in (Taft) about and hour from here. He kinda went into hiding, he stayed in a pick up camper with the windows blacked out for several months. He emerged with several new hits!!

I saw Dwight Yoakam here in Phoenix back in the mid-late 80's at a small venue and he really did put on a good show. Buck Owens was a big influence on him and Dwight recorded a couple of songs with him. Buck showed up at the concert I saw and they performed a few songs.
The Man in Black is awesome also - never saw him live but wow what an influential artist. From hillbilly to punk - Mike Ness of Social Distortion is a huge fan of his and does some good covers of his songs. I forgot to mention JC, but for me, there are just way to many musicians to name them all. What comes around goes around - especially in music. My wife is a TV junkie and I listen to music - don't care for Creality TV as I call it.

As far as country music I turn on CMT and don't know any of them....
I like the older country music... maybe not so much the crying in my beer my dog died stuff
but Johnny Cash, Jim Reeves, Marty Robbins, Statlers, Oak Ridge, Alabama, Ronnie Milsap....
All good memories for me...
Then of Course there are my favorites...The Blackwood Brothers, Hovie Lister And the Statesmen Quartet, J.D. Sumner & the Stamps Quartet... All Gone

Tell Me please.... When you guys refer to "Rock & Roll" what does it actually mean. In the UK "Rock & Roll" was the stuff from the late 50's to the early 60's. Just before the Beatles hit the scene. I have a feeling R & R in the US has a much broader meaning.

He sang "Spirit In The Sky" which I think was during the early 70's...
And Tom, I didn't have to look that up!
That is a great trivia question for the music buffs who think they know it all!

I don't think we, the US, have R&R as a broader meaning, just that it generally started around the late 60's - early 70's... Of which bands you can proudly say came from your neck of the woods, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who just to name a few!

You were right about Spirt in the Sky - There was a re-make in the mid 80's too by a greoup called Doctor & the Medics. According to my book it didn't chart in the US...

Jim -you are correct and everyone knows that song as it still gets airplay. Dave - We call the 50's early R&R and I think I have that version of Spirit in the Sky unless someone else redid it too. Was Doc and the Medics a punk band because I think the version I have an early 80's punk band.

Punk - now that was something very British. The Sex Pistols and everything that followed. Punk here only lasted two years or so. 1977 to about 1980. Lots of stuff ws born out of it and Doctor & The Medics was probably part of it. The record itself wouldn't be classified as punk more 80s retro I suppose. Just a upbeat version of the original. A good song. Brings back happy memories of discos... We have a big 80's revival here with radio stations dedicated to churning it out. The younger generation 9listen to me, the old man and not yet 40) love it.

Jim.. Its been awhile since I listened to the 80's Heavy Metal, but XM Satellite has an awesome station for this music.. Boneyard -XM41. I listened to it over the weekend, and brought back a whole lot of memories.. kinda makes me want to dig out the old cd's... I've had the kids banging their heads to Metallica since they were about 4 years old... They love Metal and Cartoons... I broke them in early..

The big hit they sung together was actually "The streets of Bakersfield". It was filmed here locally. The big yellow sign with blue "Bakersfield" letters used to be on Union Ave., before the new 99 freeway was built the old 99 passed under the "Bakersfield" sign. Buck Owens saved the sign and had it moved over to Buck Owens Blvd. and set up next to his Crystal Palace. If you love country music you got to check out the Crystal palace. It has a CM museum, CM shows, fine dining and dance hall. Chances are you'll even see Buck or another CM singer walking around.

KORN is another local Rock group from Bakersfield. Although I don't really care for their music.
